I do suppose the ED would be even better with spongy/bold, switchable rectifier and progressive linkage... more channels, ect. hmmnn, but then it might not be the same beast.

Forgive my ignorance, but would this in any way be a possible cheap alternative to a power attenuator? It sure would save some bucks, if so!
 
It doesn't really reduce the loudness a great deal, but reduces the amp's internal voltages.
