It's all personal preference. I prefer the Vintage 30 in pretty much any situation, but other guys will like the C90. The problem I see, is a lot of people end up with the C90 because it's stock, when they should have gotten the Vintage 30.

Which closed back 1x12 did you get? Is it the Thiele by chance?

Hi Don,

Thanks again for the great vids!

Has anyone here had experience with Mesa 1x12 Theile's loaded with a V30? I thought the cab was designed around an EV speaker but now comes equipped with a C90)(?) Would changing the speaker defeat the engineering behind the cab design?

Glad you liked the vid!

I've had 1x12 Thiele's in stock with the Vintage 30. AWESOME SOUNDING CABINET!!! It's one of my favorites for tone, and it's surprisingly lightweight. Worked awesome on the Transatlantic and Mark V head. It's a very full sound with a lot of bottom end. To my ears it has a similar tone to the 2x12 rec cab, but in a smaller package.

That's great to hear.. thanks!

OK, so.. you can see from my sig below that I'm running the combo for dry tones and stereo theiles for wet. I feel the theiles are a bit too directional for wet sounds... Has anyone tried removing the back of a theile cab and using it like an open back?? What combination would you piece together from what I currently have to work with?

The thiele design is great because it has a very flat response with a robust low end, but it doesn't get muddy at the same time. It is a very articulate and clear sounding cabinet. I personally love the thiele, but I also find it to be a happy medium between a good crunch setup and something which is optimized for cleans. It has the open-ness of a halfback or three quarter back cab, but the directionality of a close backed cab. A thiele is like an all season tire. It does many things well but it isn't really optimized for any one thing in particular. In a perfect world, it is better to run an open back cab for cleans and a 4 x 12 for crunch but the thiele gets you 90% of the way there for both tones, and with so much less weight. Definitely a great cab design!

I'm also surprised that this speaker would work in a 90 watt amp. Is it necessary to keep the volume down or risk a blown speaker?

Also, how hard it is to swap out speakers? Seems easy.

Does it matter if you get the 8 Ohm or the 16 Ohm version?

When I had my Mark IV years ago, I put a V30 in it and never had any problems. Just put my V30 into my V combo. I'll report back if I blow it.
