Under the Big Sky...
OK- I think I may have some "speaker-rattling" going on...only I dont know for sure- here is what I am hearing:

When i hit certain notes on the guitar (4th string "A") I can hear a sound like a "stuttering" in the low end- doesnt happen all over the fretboard- but when i does happen, it sounds lame....
Anyone know what this may be? doesnt matter if I completely lower any of the EQs- it is still occuring, but maybe not as loud....
Is this speaker rattling? Is there something possibly "loose" in the amp I need to tighten up?
ANY help appreciated- starting to get frustrated.....
couldnt reproduce the phenomena on a different ED at the shop....
I covet your knowledge.....

I'll bet ya a barred F chord it's a pre-amp tube

It is probably not this, but I will say it and tell on myself anyway.

A couple years back I had a Carvin MTS 3200 (very under rated amp)

Anyway I found I was getting a certain weird artifact (in fact stuttering would be a good way to describe it) with certain notes.

It was not way out it front but I could hear it and it drove me nuts.

After a bit of investigation I found that sound was actually fret buzz.

Not that it is what you are hearing, but man the description you gave fit the description of what I had happen.

Thanks Primal, I should have mentioned this stutter event happens with all 3 of my electrics- I originally thought it was a guitar issue- but then I really started to investigate- and it is an amplifier event. Anyone else have a guess? I am not sure how to capture the sound- and it isn't something that has always happened- I stared noticing it several weeks ago, but again, after recording- I am far more sensitive to what my gear is doing...
There has got to be a simple reason...
Anyone?

This might seem a bit silly, but have you checked that all the caps for your preamp tubes are secure? I got a buzzing noise a couple of times because one of the preamp tube caps popped off during a gig. Took me forever to find it because it was stuck to the underside of the speaker magnet. Would be worth a look.

I had a similar issue so I changed thr speaker and the problem went away. Got a new one from Mesa no questions asked.

Ok- opened up the back, felt all connections, made sure pre-amp caps are all tight, all looks good. Still have the "rumble"- definately coming through the speaker- certain frequencies only.
Any ideas? Is it time to call Mesa? Take the amp in to the shop?

ok- all is well again, not a guitar issue, but one of the outer socket power tubes was the guilty party.....all things considered- I was just happy that others also could hear the phenomenon and that I wasnt making a big deal out of something that others could not discern ...the best description of the sound was" it sounds like when you get water in your ear..." a very low woofy, rumble that would permeate as the signal degraded when playing certain areas of the guitar neck...

I had a similar issue. After swapping all of the pre-amp tubes in and out the rattle was still there. I finally tried swapping the power tubes and there it was. One of the middle 6L6s was causing the rattle.
