I know the mark iv comes with all 6L6 but i keep hearing how amazing it sounds with 6L6/EL34 combo Does any one recommend what type i should get and any suggestions on Preamp tubes?
Kinda sad but ive allways sold my amp before switiching out the tubes I was never happy with my sound i know im sticking with my mark iv so tubes are something im going to have to start investing in.

just do the preamp cocktail from doug if u don't want to spend time doing mix and match. Its one step up from stock mesa 12ax7, a little bit fuller and clearer note detail.

I bought into the Preamp cocktail from Doug. All of those tubes are now in different amps belonging to my Dad and a few friends. They completely ruined the tone of my Tripe Rec. It was muddy, lacking bass and pretty dull sounding. No where NEAR as good as the all EH tubes I put in afterwards or the cocktail I now have.

As for EL34's, I have Mesa EL34's (relabeled Sovteks you can't get anymore now that JJ is in the picture) and they sound fantastic. EH EL34's sound great too, especially if you want a little darker tone and deeper bass response than the Mesa's. I have also heard good things about Winged C EL34's being very well rounded for any type of music/playing style.

With the Mesa tubes you have the ease of ordering them and plugging them in with no hassle, BUT a premium price. With the aftermarket brands you have to order them from a reputable supplier who can supply you with a set of tubes rated to work within the Mesa operating range.

Hope the helps in your tube search.
