hi all
i bought a mesa combo used, but in mint condition (it looks like it's new !)

wanted to change 6L6 with EL34 , to try ..
and i saw this strange "screw"
mesa.jpg

try to screw but it seems to "block" somewhere (sorry for my bad english :-(

did you ever see this pb ? don't want to hurt the amp and force it...

it's really curious

any help ? thanks

Maybe it's the bolt built into the combos to keep the chassis from rattling? If so, there is a sticky on the main "modern amps" forum called "LSS chassis bolt." It might be worth it to read that if you haven't already. By all means though, safety first. If you're uncomfortable playing the amp as is, definitely bring it to a tech and have him look at it. Or if you're so inclined, pull the chassis yourself and have a look.

Edit: added the below quote from "1028paul" on page 2 of the "LSS chassis bolt" thread.

The screw in question.. just to clarrify... :)

on second pic, you can see the top of the screw has a grounding plate to make good contact with the shielding above.

If that's what it is, just tighten til snug, but definitely don't force anything.

Mine has same screw. Not sure its purpose but it does not affect playability. I wouldnt worry about it but it would be interesting to know why its there

I know safety is of concern, but if the screw actually caused a short circuit, the slow-blow fuse would kick in and shunt the power. I'm not saying that it wouldn't damage the amp, or be dangerous, only that the fuse is designed in for these reasons.

I got the same thing too with the same result. Good place to hang a Xmas ornament

It applies tension against the top of the cabinet to prevent rattles
-OR-
it provides a connection to the shielding foil on the inside top of the cab
-OR-
both.
Don't tighten it as hard as you can, it won't go in all the way.
You must loosen it if you need to remove the chassis from the cabinet.

thanks to all, and thanks for the pics !

all is ok , cool :)

had a blast with this amp today , what a sound !!! :))))
