How ridiculous would it be to play death metal on a classic Marshall JMP?
I just acquired a Todd Langer (ADA MP1 designer) modified '79 100-watt JMP Mk II. And while I'll never dump my Rectoverb, I have to say ... this is the sound I've been trying to dial in on my Mesa for progressive death metal — it's got the gain of a 5150, but with the classic Marshall midrange growl, and still plenty of low end (runs 6550 tubes), all with no boost, no outboard eq ... nothing! This thing has an extra gain stage and a 12 AT-driven effects loop, so I can run reverb or delay if I want. It also cleans up with a guitar volume roll-off, so I'm thinking of running my MXR 10-band in front as a gain cut for a "clean" channel — I like to be able to switch on the fly, and I like a little grit sometimes for clean tones. My Rectoverb will stand by for my true clean tones, running through a 120-watt, open back custom 112 cab I built for small gigs.
