Hello all, I'm new here
I just picked up a rectoverb, my first boogie. May be a stupid question, but is there a certain way to dial in tones on these amps? I've heard you need to take a different approach than other amps. (I come from marshalls, digital stuff, and vintage traynors) is there anything special about using the channel volume/output? I have not spent much time with it yet, just a few minutes in the shop...

I would say set your knobs at noon, all of them, and then just go through each one and move them up and down a little to get a feel of what they are doing.

And lots of time. Read the manual inside and out young Jedi. Do what the previous poster said and start at noon with all the knobs or use some of the templates in....The Manual.
Congratulations!!

I found the volume and out put sounded better when driven evenly. For lower volume play, drive the volume but lower the output. I'd usually drive the gain a little higher at lower volumes that I would at higher volumes. You definately won't want to drive the gain very high on this since your coming from Marshall. Noon - 2 0'clock should be more than enough.

what kind of cab you running? i run a 2x12 'cause 4x12's make recto's TOO LOOSE(for my taste anyway)....i like JCM 800 tightness

here's my settings using a mesa 2x12 w/ C90's

vintage mode:

Treble-10:30-12:00
Mid-2:00-MAX
Bass-Max
Pescence-OFF
Master-12:00 this knob sets the FX send level and also determines how hard you will slam the PI tube...this would be the only volume knob on most marshall's.
your signal hits the treble first unlike most amps where you hit the mids first and the treble determines how dominant/subtle the mid and bass knobs are.....i find it simpler to crank the mids and bass and dial the amp in with the treble knob but anything over 12;00 will start to thin your tone out IME. The lower you run the mids the looser the amp will be and it's fairly loose anyway.

for me the gain and output are interactive....but essentially the output is a PPIMV controlling how hard you hit the power tubes ....gain wise i tend to stay in the 8:00-9:00 as i don't like very much preamp gain.....i prefer to get the majority of my gain from the power section...anyway i find anything over 11:00(gain) to be unnecassary. i usaully set my output in the 12:00-3:00 region depending on the gain setting.
so when i can get away with it;

Gain 8:00
output-3:00
Solo-MAX(never changes)

i alsao use a digitech bad monkey for solos with the level all the way up and the gain at halfway.

Thanks, guys. I'm starting to figure it out. I have the combo, which I'm very impressed with. Every other combo I've played, with the exception of a vht and fender stuff, sounded pretty thin, the speakers did. I really like closed back cabinets. the boogie is very full, just what I like. I'll think about a speaker down the road, perhaps
I'll try to download a manual to read up on it as well. I have yet to play with the full band, but I'm getting some good bedroom level sounds out of it. I also set my gain alot higher when I'm by myself, or with just a drummer. as soon as a full band comes in, things calm down. I can already hear that this amp would be complimented by a bass very well.
I also don't really understand the solo feature. Is it strictly a volume boost or is it meant to add some gain as well? I usually use a sparkle drive or sd-1 for boost...

to my ears the solo adds a subtle mid boost that fattens up your tone a bit in addition to volume. i use a bad monkey as a gain boost for solos as i find it is very transparent....sounds more like i went to the 3rd channel that my amp doesn't have.
