First off I'm not interested in KT77s or the RoadKing for combining EL34s and 6L6s...

I've been wondering about a Triple Rectifier with dual EL34s in 50W mode and those plus quad 6L6s in 150W mode.

You could channel assign dual EL34s or dual EL34s + quad 6L6s using the 50W/150W Multi-Watt feature. You gain the tone benefits of EL34s alone or EL34s combined with 6L6s.

For this to work best I would think you would want all tubes (including the rectifiers if possible) to be "matched" for the Triple Rectifier EL34 in Spongy mode?

Anyone?

Rectifier tubes do not require matching, they are simply used as diodes.

Eurotubes sells "Intergrated" tube sets, these are tubes that are on the fringe (or beyond) normal bias specs for their respective tube type so they can be run as you describe. Most of the tubes used for this "Integrated" set would be discarded as "out of spec" by most other tube vendors.

I tried this myself with my 2002 Triple with not so great results (be sure to read the "UPDATES"):

IMO there is a valid reason for Randall Smith developing Progressive Linkage in the RK

YMMV.

Specifically I was referring to matching each rectifier tube's bias for the voltage in this 6L6/EL34 mismatch setup. I don't know if it makes any difference.

Ah that makes sense thanks.

Thanks for all your work! I'll read it over.

I think I was really just looking for an excuse to check out the latest generation Rectifier. Its got the goods for sure.

There is no bias to adjust (or any necessary change) for the rectifier tubes regardless of what you do with 6L6GG's & EL34's. They simply convert AC voltage to DC voltage. You can however try a GZ34 to put your available powertube plate voltage somewhere between the 5U4GB & Diode rectifier. Eurotubes will do this to try and make the amp work with tube types & ratings it was never designed for. Problem is most of the time these "custom" tube sets will no longer allow you to use the Diode rectifier as the plate voltage may go to high, raising the cathode current to "red-plate territory".

No excuse needed, just go do it!
