i noticed a few people had the TC electroinics G Force in their rigs. What do you guys/gals use to control it?

I'm thinking of getting a multi-effect unit, either the Boss GT-8 or a G force and controller. I want to know which option has better control, tone etc. Plus i also need to go cheap since i'm v poor. So at this stage i'm leaning heavily towards the Boss. However, i noticed that the GT-8 has Midid in/out. Would this allow me to control the G force?

Thanx.

A G-Major is cheaper than a G-Force, and sounds pretty good for the money. $400-$500 American for new.

I use Program changes only, and a Rolls RFX MidiBuddy gets the job done for all my effects switching needs.

I haven't heard the GT-8, but the Boss GT-6 is not even in the same category as the G-Major for effect quality, and also sound quality, including s/n ratio. The GT-6 I tried at GC always made my tone WORSE than it originally was by quite a bit, where the G-Major sounded like the effect was surrounding my original tone instead of smothering it.

You have to ask yourself, would you rather have umpteen million mediocre effects, or a smaller selection of very high quality effects? If you like quality, go with the G-Major, or the G-Force if you have the cash.

OK. I'm quite new at the rack gear situation. My current line-up is as follows:

Ibanez 6 string (acoustic - black ^_^)

Morley Wah
Boss OD-2
Boss GE-7
Boss (Super Chorus)

Ibanez Toneblaster 25R.

Eventually i will be running a Mesa/Boogie 50 Watter (and much later a road king ^_^).

What i need to get though is a delay effect. I would prefer to trade in all my pedals and get either a multi effects processor or a single rack unit that does the lot. I have no idea what else i need or how to set it up. As you can see i'm used to running a pretty simple rig. Any help is much appreciated.

EDIT: Spelling

The G-Major was my starter unit for rackage, and it's not going anywhere. The delays are good and usable, the chorus is lush, the tremolo is reliable. I use the latest software download, and I have a bunch of presets for the harmony settings too. Great for Thin Lizzy leads!

Some vendors throw in the G-Minor controller as a bonus, so shop around.

Your amp must have an effects loop, as you really can't put the G-Major in front with your pedals. The G-Major doesn't have any distortion of its own, so all your preamp gain must come from pedals or the amp preamp.

Thanks CVANSICKLE.

I have absolutely no money right now, so i will be doing all my research, then getting my stuff later this year.

OK so if i go for the G major - which is available at one of my local stores ATM - i will need to control it, this uses a midi controller, they have a couple of options down there. What does the controller change? Are the controls assignable? Can i use an expression pedal - ala John Petrucci - to change the values in real time?

Thanx for all the help - i am going to go look at the TC electronics pages now, maybe i can download the manuals.

The G-Major responds to MIDI control changes and program changes, so any MIDI floorboard that can do both is a good investment. The G-Minor controller does both, but requires some fancy footwork if you need to evoke multiple changes mid-song. You can use various expression pedals with the G-Major, and the answers can be found in their downloadable manuals and FAQs on their web site.

Like I said, the G-Major was my first MIDI experience. Since then, I've learned a lot about MIDI with other devices too. Good way to start your MIDI education.

OK, so i went down to one of the local shops over the weekend (only had 15 minutes due to parking) and spoke with a sales guy. I was explaining that i want a multi-effects unit, and spoke with him about the G-major and the Boss GT-6.

I asked if the Midi in/out on the GT-6 can handle the G major - so we looked it up in the book and apparently IT CAN!!! So now all i need to do is save up for the GT-6 (there is a GT-8, but it is just a black version of the GT-6) or i may look into a digitech or the POD floorboard. The GT-6 is about $850 (AUD) so it is still a little expensive for me right now. I also need to get a new electric and a good amp. So i will be saving for most of the year!!

Thanx to everyone for their help so far.

Shaun,

Dude, the GT8 is not just a black version of the GT6. The tone has been noticably improved, along with the features. Go to www.rolandus.com and check out the namm demo and here's a clip from a harmony central user that's pretty impressive, too.

For the difference i'd like to see a lot more for the $. The GT-8 is a slight update from the GT-6 which will suit my needs right now. I want a multieffects unit that i can use with rack stuff later. The GT-6 can do that.

When i was talking to the sales guy i asked what he had. He said he just bought a new GT-8, but hadn't even taken it out of the box yet. He compared the upgrade to other brands. Apparently Digitech made vast improvements in their pedal boards - i can't remember what, as did POD.

I am only really after an effects unit i can use for delay with my existing pedals. Hence i will be saving for the GT-6.

I've owned a GT6 in the past and it was a real shocker piece of tool. Since then I've been skeptical but earlier this year I decided to try POD XT & the GT8 - I was actually surprised that the GT8 was not bad, even topping the XT in my books. So now I've got a GT8 & a dual rec. head I received today in the mail...will hafta try it out sometime =)
