I really think that the term "Less Gain" in early MK III's is a misnomer.
In actuality, it is the tone shaping or gain voicing that may be responsible for the public perception. Basically, Boogie used the .001 bright reduction cap on the V3B plate load resistor. They may use the 10pf cap on the 3.3M circuit that bridges the clean and lead channel. It may technically not have any less gain, but it will sound smoother with slightly less highs, so it aurally sounds like it has less gain. From the Black Dot to the Blue Stripe it is capacitor C-30. From some research and MK III circuit ogling, the Green Stripe is the only series not to have it stock. So, if you guys want a bit more gain and highs, unsolder one leg of C-30 ( CAREFULLY PLEASE, YES I AM YELLING ) and you will hear an increase in the gain and the perception of having more of it. If you want to keep the mod, just shrink wrap the removed leg and leave it in the amp. Easy reversal if you want your old tone back.
