Hi all, I am sorry if this has been answered before.

Ok my mini rectifier set at 25W modern, gain 13:00-14:00, eqs at noon, master 9:00 on. I get a pretty noticeable background noise(waterfall, hiss......), not so in the vintage mode and hardly any when in the clean channel. I can elminate most of it with a noise gate in the loop. Is this normal for a high gain amplifier like the mini? Thank you,

Thanks, yes I have actually done it twice! I did a full retube last week. It got better but the noise is still there. I forgot to mention that the loop is hissing a bit too.

I haven't had noise problems with mine with similar settings. Still, that is a LOT of gain.

I recommend ruling out other causes.

1. Turn off the loop. Noise reduced?

2. Guitar volume to zero. Noise reduced?

3. Different guitar cable. Noise reduced?

Hi, thanks for the input. Guitar volume to zero or maxed, I hear the noise regardless. Neither the loop switch nor the cables does anything. I am beginning to think that it is something internal.

what else is in the loop? what is up front between guitar and amp? no pedals?

that is a lot of gain. I had a hum in mine when i first got it, but rearranging power cords and outlets got rid of that. you can have problems if you run your amp and pedals from the same power source. my solution was to switch the pedal power supply to the other side of the strip, because I found out my power strip has each side grounded seperately. But I will still have hiss if I run my settings like yours.

Thanks, I actually had no pedals whatsoever. Clean, clean pushed, vintage, I hardly have any noise, hiss....Loop : as soon as something is plugged in ---> hiss.

Haven't experienced that noise problem, but like the other guy said, man that's alot of gain. I can't get the gain much past noon on Ch2. I keep gain around 10:30-11:30 at most. I've learned with Mesas that's it's better to fight a little for your gain rather than crank the gain knob up.

Thanks, I normally keep the gain much much lower than noon. I was just testing the mini after a re-retube. I've had my mesas gone bad a few times in the past and it kind of resembles the issue. I don't know much about electronics but the repair guy told me something internal went bad or something like that. It has always been with mesas for me.

Sounds normal to me. I have JJ el84s and ruby 12ax7hg+ in v1 and 2, and a Furman power condition and get a similar hiss. Rectifiers are not going to be whisper quiet.

Also, I havent tried but i have my amp right next to my computer and wireless router which may/may not be impacting the noise on gain channel.

Thanks all for your help,

I assume it is simply a byproduct of the amplifier's circuit design. I just put an isp decimator in the loop and that seems to have taken care of it so far.

Any more updates on your hissing issue? I just picked up a Mini and love it but once I get past Noon on the gain the hiss starts up. I am thinking this is just the nature of cranking the gain on the amp.

I put a set of JJ EL844s in and that semed to tame the hiss down a little. I think the 25w modern is noisy no matter what. I played two mini recs at a nearby store the other day and both of them sounded just as noisy as mine.
