Playing merrily with Mark V Mini when suddenly there's a drastic drop in volume. I've been playing it using Cab Clone Speaker off since I got it with no issues when this happened. There's still sound but very quiet. EL34s look ok but can't see much else. All channels have same low volume.

Ok... weird. I pick shut the Mini 25 off for a few minutes then turn it back on and the volume is still very low. I switched guitar cable and mic cable for cab clone and that didn't change anything. So I pick up the Mini, which sits on my desk, and put it on my lap to look in the back to see what I can see as far as the tubes go, suddenly there's a hit of static and regular volume is back.

Any ideas?

Could have been a number of things.
Tube not seated well.
FX loop connection.
Scratchy pot.
Questionable cable.
Pup selector switch on your guitar.
Etc.

Haven't fiddled with tubes yet.
Nothing in FX Loop
Pots seem to be functioning normally
Changed all cables
Changed guitars

I was thinking when you lifted it up and put it on your lap you may have inadvertently fixed the problem if it was tubes or pots.
As for the FX loop what happens sometimes is the send and return jacks can get dirty or sticky and you loose signal. Running a 6" patch cable between the send and return will eliminate this if you encounter the problem again.
If you find out what it was please post it here.

Could very well have been a bad connection in a tube. Kind of like when a light bulb goes bad, but then you tap it and comes back to life. Keep spares handy...

I'm going to make sure all tubes are secure. Seems the most likely possibility.

Agree on reseating the power tubes, I took off the cage and reseated mine before even powering up the first time.

Preamp tubes are probably OK since there is so much pressure on them.

I would reseat all of the tubes, not just the power tubes. EL84 use the same socket as the 12ax7 preamp tubes so the pin grip will be the same. Almost sounds like one of the preamp tubes shut down or has poor contact in the socket. If this issue is persistent, or behaves no differently with a new tube, call Mesa Service.

I had also a volume drop in my Mark V 25 after approx 1 month. After swapping around the preamp tubes, that gave some other different problems. Then I changed all tubes, even the power tubes and my amp work as it should and the distortion became better and more tight.

I used to have this same problem in a Nomad 45 that I owned. Believe it or not, it was because NOTHING was in the FX loop. In order to solve the problem, I either had to have something in the loop...OR, simply one cable plugged into the in/outs of the loop. Then the problem would stop.

Try dipping a 1/4 inch cable tip into contact cleaner and then insert and remove it several times from the effects loop inputs (send/return). If these contacts get dirty the foreign matter can hold the contacts open and can intermittently kill the signal.
Hope this helps,
Thanks
