Hey guys! I have a Mesa story that I felt I should share!

So, I ordered a quad of E34Ls and a pair of GZ34s from eurotubes a day ago, received them in the mail today!

From the very start, Bob and Jay were very helpful , always answering my huge e-mails to every last detail!

So, for all their help, I thought I'd finally take action on my curiosity and try the tubes from them!

With the new tubes in hand, I went to jam with the band! Took the living room apart, set up out rigs, turned up, and went.

Like always, the same little nuicances came out in my tone....especially the looseness and flabbiness as of late. No matter what I dialed in, I could not get a tight, articulate tone.....

So, after playing on my stock tubes for about an hour, I powered down, unplugged, and swapped out the stock rectifier tubes for the GZ's!

Powered on....warm up....turn on....I AM BLOWN AWAY! The hype around these tubes is completely justified! They tightened my tone beyond belief! I have been playing much faster as of late, and this is very important to me! My bass now cuts, while thumping! It is razor sharp....not muddy, and completely spreading out to nothingness. It stays together the whole way!

I couldn't stop playing! It brought a whole new life to my entire rig! My guitar sounded better than ever! I could hear every note, even in more complex chordings! And now I can plam mute quickly and actually hear what I'm playing! I have actually found that I now have much more usable gain, as it doesn't turn to a complete mess!

As you can see, I'm ecstatic! It is really sad how Mesa, which builds such high quality amps, buts such poor tubes in there. There really is a beast waiting inside! You just have to unleash it wih a retube!

Best part......I still have the quad of JJ E34Ls and a quad of JJ 6L6's to try!

So, for anyone that owns a mesa and just can't find their tone 100%....try a retube! It has done wonders for me, and can definitely help others! My advice.....do it step by step.....start with recto tubes....then poweramp, and finally preamps. By taking small steps, you can try to solve your problem in more variables! If you do it all at once, you just may skip over that small problem!

My final rant: After this, I have actually found my Keeley modded SD-1 to be obsolete to me....I can dial in an even better tone...identical, only more harmonically rich, with channel 2 raw, and there is no need for boost or tightening!

So, part #2.....mesas are so versatile, and so amazingly built, that there is really no need for many effects....especially dirt boxes.

Only thing I run is a tuner, wah, and noise decimator....nothing else!

Hope this helps a bit for people looking to finalize their mesa tone! They are amazing amps. I couldn't image owning something different! They just need a little swap in the right direction!

P.S. Keeley Modded Boss SD-1 and Mesa 5U4GB rectifiers tubes are for sale, so if anyone is interested, please PM me!

Long post ehh......

Hope someone atleast takes the time to read it / gets something from it!

Exactly! I just want to jam out loud right now....it's 11 though, and everyone is sleeping!

But no one can tell me the rectifier isn't tight....I now have the best of both worlds!

Hm that sounds like I'd really like that, but here's my question. I keep it on Solid state rectifier becuase that was tighter than tube rectifier. So since I'm switched to solid state rectifier, the rectifier tubes aren't being used right? So in my case, it'd make no sense to switch the rectifier tubes I think?

Either way I need to retube the powertubes soon, its been long overdue...

I have actually been sitting on the idea of retubing with the GZ34's. Just because well, they aren't really that expensive and it might be all i was looking for. On a side not i was also toying with the idea of trying out E34L's. I am probably going to order up the standard retube kit for 6L6's and a Standard retube kit for the E34L's. I will FOR SURE be getting a set of the GZ34's. I mean for $28 that the GZ34's cost i don't think i can go wrong from what i read, and it sounds like you found what i am looking for in your tone with these, and from your clips and stuff we play similiar styles of music. Thanks for the post.

1. Tremonti settings are very nice! In all honesty, a bit to scooped for my tastes, but I need to try them again with the new tubes...the tightness just might allow for it!

2. As for the PRS, the funds for it should be in within the next few weeks!

In all honesty, after the retube, I feels like I'm playing a new guitar! The flab made my entire rig feel loose! The new rectifiers make everything seem sooo much better! I really don't know if I NEED the PRS

Sweet dude! I was amazed at the GZ's myself. I tried talking to Mesa at the last NAMM show I went to... They just insisted that their choice of tubes are optimal to the amps. I just scratched my head and took the t-shirt.

Thats it, this afternoon my order will be placed with Eurotubes!

If you really want to be blown away get the KT-88's w/ high gain pre's and the GZ 34's! Bob wasn't joking about vaporizing small animals...

Was that Jay and Silent Bob ?

I have been using GZ34's for about 2 years and find them to be a better all around match in the DR. My personal preference is the GT KT 66HP. It gives you the best if both worlds. I have to admit that the DR is and awsome amp with E34L's in it and the GT 6CA7 GE is a beast too.

Enjoy. :D

i agree. they do sound really huge though, if you want to just crank up and feel some fury every now and then.

i started to get discuraged by the first part of your thread... but then i saw that you were still playing through your stock tubes  Haha, so have you replaced them yet? or you're gunna wait til you need to...? By the way, I've always heard good things about the GZ's... makes me wanna get some but I'm considering buying some JJ 6L6's to replace my stock tubes, ugh, i'm torn, i don't know what i want!

What difference/relations exist between this JJ rectifier tube and the old tall coke bottle Mesa 5U4G (NOT 5u4gb, the small one). I really like the sound of the coke tube and wonder if the JJ will be drastically different from it.

I can't wait. Going to be ordering soon, so many different tubes i would like to try out, my bank account is going to be tad smaller soon :)

Yes, the old 5U4G's that came with the two channel Dual Recs. They're what I've always ran! I tried the JJ GZ34's, was'nt much difference! I put the Mesa 5U4G's back in! Mostly for reliability and the lack of differences!

yeah .. I am kind of confused too .. your whole tonequest in the post is because you swapped rectifier tubes only? .. not the Powertubes?

What about just going from stock rectifier tube, to the SS one? Doesn't that tighten up the bass too?

not the same way. i don't know the engineering part of it, but the feel and tone is very different, even from the SS diodes. I've tried all the combinations and the tight recto soudn he speaks of can't be had w. the diodes.

jbird, thanks for clearing that piece up btw.

I knew you'd like them dude ;)

Now you can make a new thread when you hear the EL34L's too.. they'll blow you away
