Need some advice. I recently played a Diezel Einstein and loved it and from what I've read the Herbert is even better. I'd love to buy one but no cash. I've got plenty of Mesa gear and don't want to part with any of it, but it would be my only option. The Mesa gear that will not part with is a Triaxis and 2:90, a Mark IV, and a Pre 500 Dual Rectifier. The gear I would consider getting rid of would be a Quad preamp and 295 power amp and a 2 channel Dual Rectifier revision f (chrome chassis, chrome face). From what I can guess, for what I could get for these would come close to picking up a used Herbert. Now to my question... Would I be a total idiot for getting rid of these items (especially the quad)? Is the Herbert that good? The music I play is in the lines of Metallica, Anthrax, Killswitch Engage, etc. But I do play a lot of lead work also (to see a few samples, look me up Paul Button on YouTube). I know this is a subjective question, but I'm on the fence with it.
Thanks!

Since you have all of that Mesa gear, it might be worth it to try something new. I'd say that even missing those three pieces of equipment, you'd still be good on Mesa gear with a pre-500 dual and a triaxis AND a mark iv. The Herbert looks to be an amazing amp. I don't think you would be disappointed. I'd do it.

+1

Diezel amps are awesome! You might want to try a w/d/w rig with the Herbert and your triaxis rig :)

what is a w/d/w rig?

w/d/w=wet/dry/wet. Wet and dry refers to an amp amp or speaker cab with effects on it. So for you the Herebert will be in the middle with no effects (dry) and then you'd run a cab right and left from your tiaxis/290 rig wet (with effects). Don't know about the Herbert but the VH4S has a through jack on the front, it enables me to send a signal to input of another amp without having to use an AB box or any other kind of signal splitter. Let me know if you have any other questions. Have fun! :)

Yes....yes it is....

The Herbert is an animal. Besides the fact that it does it all from glassy clean to brutal high gain, it is Midi programmable and can use just about any power tube you choose.

The Herbert is a very different hi gain when compared to Mesa. It's similar to Engls as in very clear, no fizz, super tight, high gain.

Since you have played an Einstein, then you have something to compare to, and if you like the Einstein than you should like the Herbert even more.

So, did you end up going for it?

I really like the Diezel amps, though they're a lot different from Mesa. I had an Einstein combo for a little while, but I unloaded it pretty quickly; the fact that it was a 1x12 was NOT for me. If you go for a Diezel, you'll need to get used to the gain structure because it's not like any other amp.

As for tone, I've heard people liking the Einstein more than the Herbert, calling the Einstein more "organic". I wouldn't exactly call either one organic when put next to an Ecstasy or JCM800, but relative to the Herbert, I'd agree. If I were going for another Diezel though, I'd get the Herbert before the Einstein. If you're playing metal like you've stated, this will give you a ton of options and work really well for what you'll be doing. As states, its MIDI capabilities are very useful. I'd probably do something like use the Mid Cut for rhythm, then put your mids back in for lead work. That would be cool!

Post back with updates if you go for it!

I'll definitely post back when I go for it. It's just a question on when, not if. Two problems... 1. Deciding which one to go for. Since I've played the Einstein, I still want to try the Herbert and VH4.
2. Money. Since I have more gear than I need, I really should sell some of it to fund my purchase. I've got my Quad Preamp, 295 power amp, and my 2 Channel DR up for sale but so far only one low ball offer. Hopefully I'm not asking too much. But from looking at completed sales and figuring that I will come down a little in the negotiation process, I think the asking prices are fine to start with. I think the current economy is part of it.
Will post back when I make my new purchase but it'll be a while.
Thanks

The Guitar Center in Atlanta has a used Herbert 180W for 3500. It is perfect looking. The digital latching instead of switches on the front are cool as well as the blue LEDs. As loud as it can be, you can play it at a reasonable level. I played channel 3 for about 20 minutes yesterday. It is way cool, I did not find $3500 worth of cool but I didn't have much time. It will probably be there for a few weeks though.
