A quiet Mesa?....

Well, a few which sound good, or at least fair, at low volumes IMO:

Subway series

ummmm....

uhhh...

 :?

Mark III simulclass. run in Class A push the preamp and lower the master. Bed time music SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Mesas work at bedroom levels like Ferraris work on gravel roads...

there's another massive thread going on this. summary:

some guys say you can get good tone at bedroom levels just by dialing in really different settings than you would use to play live.

some guys (me included) don't think it's worth the trouble, and say get a different amp/rig that's meant to play quiet.

The biggest thing, if you really want to take the volume down, is to use a 1x12 with a relatively "inefficient" speaker.

Alot of people have trouble with this for some reason. Either I don't try to play whisper quiet or i'm not as picky as i think i am about my tone in the bedroom. in any case, all the mesas i've owned have sounded great at low volumes. the mark iv's volume knob was ULTRA sensitive and required an attenuator to smooth it out so i could find a good low volume without blasting my ear drums by moving the knob 1/64th too much to the right. BTW, I prefer 1x12's to 4x12's any day so maybe this plays a role...

+1 What's up with that one little spot? It's really quiet and then jumps up in volume. But, if you can get it right in between, it's really cool.

my IIC+ sounds killer at extreme low volume. My Recto doesn't sound bad. Both get better as you turn them up. These Boogies are NOT like my Marshall non masters!

My bandmate's roadster sounds just fine at low volumes because with 4 6L6s at 100W, the power tubes are a pretty small part of the equation unless you're at mind-altering volumes.

It's a different flavor , but tasty none the less .

Seriously? Both my green and purple stripes just sound fizzy and washy if I do that. Again, works on the Roadster just fine though.

This is why I sold my Mesa. I don't gig and only get together with other guitar players once a week maybe. recently I have been finding myself using headphones with a cheap $70 zoom in the living room. My mesa sat and collected dust. Too , Heavy and too loud, at least for me anyway.

I bought a new zoom, the G9.tt. I use it with head phones or run it through a 1x12 Peavey Combo. What's cool is that the G9's pre amp is powered by tubes and the Peavey's power section runs off two EL34's. So I'm still runing all tube power.

The G9 has the Duel Rec's Vintage high gain, Modern high gain and clean channel.

It also has the Mark lll crunch channel.

Playing DC 10, 60/100 212 w/ my Gibson LP in the bedroom at night with Gain @ max Ch Level @ just 2.5 Master @ just 1.5 SOUNDS AWESOME and very QUIET. SWEEEEETTT.

Mine too!

I turn it way up such that I can barely tolerate, and then turn it down to basement levels and I don't hear any loss of tone. There is a bit of a loss of speaker dynamic, of course.

I generally play distorted, though. Maybe people that think it needs to be loud use the cleans more? I guess it is possible that there's more of a harmonic swirl to the cleans way up there in volume, but I wouldn't know.
