Mesa Boogie Studio Pre help...!!

Hello.

I need some help to get the best tones out of my Studio Pre. (I bought it last week.)
No matter how I turn the knobs I feel that there is a blanket or a carpet over the sound.
The distortion is also very "rough", "undefined", like a blown up speaker. Make any sense??
I don`t know how old the tubes are but they look pretty new.
The tubes are the ones with black rubber on them.
It´s made in 89.

Anyone out there that can help me with the tone??

Start with the tubes. I threw a SPAX (the one with the rubber) in V1 of my blue stripe Mark lll yesterday and it was horrible. I put the old GE back in and it roared back to life. Night and Day.
