Hey Guy's I am looking for a good boost for my Rackmount Rectifier.
Looking to tighten it up a bit a clean up the gain.
I tried my high gain modded SD-1 it sounds great with my JCM 800
but not so good with my Rectifier.
I tried my friends Keeley TS9 and it sounded great.
But I don't know how a stock one or a Maxon 808 would compare.
Just looking for a good Metal boost.

Thanks
Ron

I just bout a Keeley Modded TS-9 from Ebay...can't wait to plug it in. However, hope the guy didn't just take my money and run...three days trying to contact him and no response. :|

Hi Ron

This is a good read over at the UM-forum if you haven't already read it.

I A/B:d a friends maxon 808 with a ts9 using the exact settings I primary use (exclusively plying metal).. very interesting conclusions were made.

The difference between the original TS-808 Tube Screamer and the TS-9 is a couple of resistors.

(From R.G. Keen:) "... just locate the 470 ohm and 100k resistors on the output buffer transistor, tracing back from the output jack, and replace them with a 100 ohm and a 10K. Bang, instant 808.”

Well, I have built about 11 or so DIY screamers that have about 10 toggle switches for 10 different mods, and time after time, the TS9/808 mod leaves little to no audible difference in tone.... thats just my 2 cents, from years of experience.

I much prefer the TS9 with my recto for two reasons, one it cuts a little of the bottem end which I think the recto has way to much, but honestly you wouldnt notice that much. Second it gives it a little upper mid boost that the recto is missing.

Interesting...I am looking to build an overdrive clone. What is your favorite?
You built 11 or so, as you say....I sense you have a good feel for the one(s) that sounds the best.
I will be using in front of a Stiletto and/or Studio 22.
What do you recommend? I don't want to go through 11 to find the "one".
Thanks

ps...do you have any thoughts on the DOD 250, mods, clones, etc?

I personally dislike the DOD250 distortion. My favorite distortion pedal is my modified shredmaster clone. I am working ona dr boogey dual rec clone now.

As for OD's, you cant go wrong with a screamer type pedal. The BYOC OD2 is a great pedal that incorporates many of the famous mods. Its an excellent pedal.
I really have to recommend the Blues breaker OD if you like a more transparent OD and want to hear more of the guitars wood and the amps character than your typical screamers that add their own flavor.
I have both and have built both.

Check this video out. BYOC also sells the BB/OD for an excellent price, or one can be built for you.

Kingston11 how close is the OD2 to a TS9 or 808?
I can't find a clip of one running on a high gain amp..

The OD2 is a an exact Screamer clone, but with way more features, especially the boost that can be put before or after the overdrive.
It pushes high gain amps very well, just like any screamer. The lack of clips is probably because the OD2 is fairly new.

"Features:

ALL the tubescreamer mods you know and love....and then some. We've put the
most popular 2 mods on a switch. We've added internal trimpots for both the
"More" and "Less" mods so you can dial those in precisely the way you want. And
we've come up with a new mod that increases the overall output and distortion of
the tube screamer circuit and adds some compression and sag like you'd get from
a real tube rectifier making the pedal even more tube like. Or you can just dial
the pedal in like a stock TS808 if that's what you want.

Comes with both the legendary Burr Brown OPA2134 ultra hi-fidelity op amp for
the ultimate boutique tone AND the classic and equally legendary JRC4558D op
amp for vintage TS808 tone. The op amp is socketed, so you decide.

A second boost channel that can either be built as a silicon based boost or a
MOSFET clean boost

3-way clipping switch. Choose from the very popular silicon-none-LED clipping
modes or what ever you want to use as a clipping device.

3-way EQ switch. Choose from stock with midrange hump, full with less midrange
hump, or fat with lots of bottom end

You guys have been asking to put all the jacks on top. Improved layout that's
easier than ever to build

Compact 125b size enclosure, yet surprisingly easy to operate both the boost and
bypass footswitches....even for people with big feet.

True Bypass"

Just got my TS-9DX with Keeley mod. Played it through my home cabinet and was completely blown away by how well it cleaned up all the mush. The sustain, EQing, and responsiveness of the amp improved dramatically as well. Can't wait to gig it through my recto cab tomorrow!

I like my Keeley TS9DX Flexi 4X2 in front of my Roadster. However, I generally prefer to not use it for rhythm if possible, cause as with most overdrive pedals, you are going to get some compression, and sometimes the tone isn't as big no more, if that makes sense. I sometimes improvise by using an EQ pedal in the loop instead...

I just found a old Arion Tubulator that Musicians Friend sent me by accident years ago.
I kept it for the $10.00 charge and threw it in my closet.
I put it in front of my amp and it sounds damn good.
It has to be the best $10.00 pedal I ever played.

this or the od808. cant go wrong with either. The BYOC does the maxon and then some. Probably the best all around tubescreamer you can buy. Or mod your SD-1 to 808 specs. Its easy
