Played a fresh out of the box Vintage Modern 100W head through a matching 4x12 cab yesterday. What an amp! If I didn't want the versatility of a 2ch amp, I'd seriously consider that puppy. Cool deep purple color as well! Check it out if you have the chance.

Think I may plug into the new JVM next time I visit the shop, though it looks a bit too much for my needs (4ch and tons of knobs).

im definitely intruiged by these amps. i think im gonna stop at gc commack and fire one up tommorow.
how does the amps higher gain settings sound?

I just sold my 1988 JCM800 2210. That head sounded exactly like Ride the Lightning. I could get it to do Kill 'em All too.

Did you have to crank the master to get that kind of tone? I love the way my 800 sounds but it's pretty dry/low gain compared to the tones on Ride the Lightning.

I got that RTL beginning at about 4. I never got to get above 6.

The Vintage Modern sounds great! But it really isn't a high gain amp, though the highest gain settings available are pretty **** good imho. Single channel, built to be sensitive to playing dynamics and guitar volume/tone pot settings. If I could afford a second amp right now, I'd have bought it on the spot.

I played the JVM today... versatile, yes. But, I was not impressed by the actual tones from the higher gain settings. People who complain about Rectos being fizzy and "full of bees" need to check this amp out. Buzzzzzzzz. Not my bag.

I also played an Ace and a Mark IV one final time before leaving the store with a brand new Rockerverb 50 head. Man, does it sounds sweet... those 6V6s are magical.

:)

i read that james used a tubescreamer with the marshall on that album for his rhythm tone. he said he wasnt happy with the sound because of that.

I know he used to like "the Rat" but there is also mention about using a tube screamer. As far as the 800 feeling low gain you should boost it or use the split channel heads. Those split channel heads really are monsters. I don't know why so many people give them such a hard time. I would much rather play a good 2210 than a 2203. There again, I love my 2204 because it gets power tube distortion at more reasonable levels. But yeah, my 2210 was all about RTL tones with nothing else.
