I just got back from a visit to the Mesa Boogie store in Hollywood, CA, and I asked the guy working there about the Mark V rumors.

His first comment was that he can't agree or disagree with anything I asked him. However, he subtly told me the jist of what's to be expected.

First of all, he made it very clear that the Mark V is way over due. It should be out in possibly 2 months. It has 3 channels with separate controls for each; there is nothing being shared. Also, it has a contour controller. And, there was a bit more he added, but I can't remember.

what do you mean you can't remember? :p

Intresting rumour about the contour though. Contour is generally a mid slice paramater. Makes me wonder if they are mixing a Mark with a rectifire.

Wait... is the contour a replacement for the GEQ? Because it would be a big mistake if Mesa did such a thing. Hell, I think all rectos should have the GEQ. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Just out of curiosity, does Mesa have a time frame when new equipment comes out? Winter Namm?

I remember Harley's new bikes always came out around July/August time frame. Just wondered if it was the same with Mesa?

They like all other companys usually show all their new wares at winter NAMM however I have a feeling Mesa's new gem may not be completely ready to bring out of the oven . There may be a prototype at NAMM all the same . The suspense will end in mid January .

Hmm, I hope they won't discontinue the Mark IV. I like the Mark IV and the prices will go up I think, especially if the new Mark V lacks the GEQ.

My biggest fear is that for economic sake all the LDR's will be replaced with relays and FET's in the switching matrix like the nomads. A contour control at the preamp stage also means more signal passing thru transistors. Let's hope that the Mark quality is not compromised by adding more whistles and bells while trying to keep the amp cheap.

did he mention tri-class? i hope the upgrades/mods are more substantial than just a countuor knob and independent controls...

me too. Hopefully they can make the amp that will launch is into the next decade of music, as they've done before...the one right now sucks!!

Sooo... are you saying don't buy a Mark IV now.. because a V will come out that is better? Or will it be different.. like the IIc+ to the III to the IV... ie further away from the Tone of the IIc+ that so many of us want?

I want that metallica MOP,AJFA, black album sound... I'm leaning towards a IV and Traditional 4x12

there's no way of knowing if there will even be a Mark5 soon, so much less can we speculate about how it will sound. If you've waited this long for a Mark4 though, I would wait an extra month to find out about the Mark5 at Namm. If nothing happens, spring for a mark4 and cab and welcome to metallica heaven.

The contour bit is coming from the Express amps . Everyone be patient , you will be rewarded

Ha! I thought the Contour feature was OK for Mesa's entry level (IMO) amps (F-Series, Express), but on one of the FLAGSHIPS? Puh-lease! Give me the GEQ and I can make my own "Contour". I HATE being boxed into a preset. If it's a contour in ADDITION to the GEQ fine. Individual controls: that's a given I'd say.

Guess we shall see. If there's any truth to these rumors I feel pretty sure Mesa wouldn't mess with their Legacy. And let's face it, the Mark series is what started it all.

Wouldn't it be cool if it had the Express clean (Which I prefer over the LSC), Tite Gain type sound on Channel 2, and the Mark IIC+/IV lead on Channel 3? Maybe even a switchable Mid Gain for soloing. Ah to dream.....

No matter, I still love my Mark IV!

I'd like the Mark v to keep the ingredients of the Mark Iv sounds but maybe adding the technology found in the RoadKing (linkage, bold.modern..), keeping the geq of course but adding a solo boost maybe a 4th channel, and would be nice to be "midi ready" hum and the come back of the EVM12L speaker for combos.......
