I've been reading what people think about the Mark V and to be honest it's been 50/50 some like it and some don't,so my question is,i was going to take my Uberschall TJ to guitar center and do a trade,im sure im going to take a hit but you guys think it'll be worth it? I'll be using the Mark V with a Pittbull Ultralead
for live gigs, and i'm looking for a tight dark tone,
Is it worth taking a hit? Is the Mark tone still the Mark tone?

Thanks
Jerry

Mark tone has always been a love/hate thing... The Mark V has been no different in that regard.

I will say that if you're looking for dark tone you might be looking at the wrong amp. I find them semi-bright, but I'm used to how dark a Recto sounds so that may be skewing my opinion.

Holy crap man!!!

You have the definitive killer dark metal amp.

I had my MKV for about a year and a half. It was 'almost' good. Personal choice of course. I now have a Recto Verb S2 single rec, bought Saturday. Back to having a rec as in the past.

I am thinking maybe you should try a MKIII or MKIV. I love my Mesa amps, MKIIC and Rec. but when Mesa decided to do a modeling amp, the MKV, and recreate something almost as good as the amps of the past, they did exactly that. An almost as good as collection of modes.

You can find a MKIII and a Rectifier for less than one MKV and have two great sounding amps.

But the TJ is not getting it for you....? Do you have KT88's in it? Are they worn out? That thing should just rip your face off if you crank it thru a good 4x12. Even low it still is solid. That thing is a flamethrower of dark angry pissed off metal.

Anyway, my two cents. I personally just didnt bond with the MKV. Lots of people do and get good sounds from it.

Good luck on the tone quest. The old Mark III & IV rock. Kick the tires. You may save mad cash and get a better amp. Not trying to trash it, it was just not for me.

Peace

I love my MkV! It is MY favorite amp for my needs to date and I have owned it since its release four years ago. I also own a MkIV and many other Mesa Boogie amps which I also really enjoy, just not as much as my MkV overall.

1. Is it a Mark? Hell yes, but one with a lot more flexibility in all 3 channels IMO.
2. Do all modes offered in the MkV (MkI, IIc+, MkIV, etc.) sound exactly like their true counterparts? NO, but each mode of all channels of the V can be set to sound terrific IMO. The modes and sounds offered in Ch1 & 2 alone are better than those of previous Marks (at least my MkIV)....by far. The modes and sounds offered in Ch3 of the MkV sound great and work very well for me, but are NOT exact duplicates of the IIC+ or MkIV. I don't find this to be a problem, but that is just me.
3. Is it the "Swiss Army Knife" of the Mark Series....capable of all sounds, but master of none? Some think so, but not me. In fact, I feel that some of the best "Mark" sounds reside in the MkV.....especially in Ch1 and Ch2! Some people really don't like the MkV sounds offered in Ch3 which is fine and I understand they don't sound exactly like their IIC+ or MkIV counterparts. However, personally, I am able to dial in great sounds in Ch3 of the MkV for my taste. To each their own.

I have never played through a Uberschall TJ....so really can't provide any useful info regarding that amp.

The MkV is very capable of being set to sound great for all styles of music IMO....and yes, Metal if that is what one desires. When rehearsing or playing live, I set my MkV channels for a nice clean, crunch and high gain lead sounds which work great for all styles of music for me...Rock, Blues, Country, Pop, etc...

Personally, I don't play metal at all....

My advice is to spend some time playing through the MkV if possible and form your own opinion.

Best of luck whatever you decide!

i love my mkv but I would advise you to never get rid of an amp you like for another amp.....because at some point you will "miss" the amp you traded and new one will never live up to the "good ole days" when that other amp was doing it for you.

i have found you are usually better off keeping what you have or simply waiting until you can afford to own both....then you have choices depending on what mood you are in.

The only sound Im having trouble getting is on ch 2 a soldano tone. I just a/b them MV comes close but not as thickon high strings. I can explain it you have to have a soldano to understand the warmth they have. Other than that the Mark V is the best and I have ever played.fi
