Hi all ye from the "Vintage Board". Given that the Mark V is not a IIC+, what are your opinions on the Mark V?

I have a IIC upgraded to a IIC+ and it's a fine amp. I'm not expecting the Mark V to replace that. But, I'm looking for that "other" sound in addition to my classic boogie lead and boogie clean. I'm the cliche. I'm looking for Boogie PLUS that mid gain AC/DC sound. Will the Mark V suffice? Channel 2 crunch? Is it good?

Or, to gain that sound, is the compromise just too great for the (supposedly) less awesome channel 3?

What are the thoughts? I'm not going to ditch my IIC or anything...I'm just looking to add that missing sound. If not the Mark V, then what? Are there any decent new Marshalls that I can buy these days that'll give me that missing sound?

Thanks for your consideration...

Hi Chip

When i was auditioning speaker cabs i was abel to A/B the mark V with my DRG upgraded c+,(100pt)

With my usual c+ metal settings the mark V in c+ mode/Triode sounds like a slightly less organic c+ without the pull deep pulled, but a absolutly briliant amp none the less.
The mark IV mode sounds more like the c+ , but IMO juding what is best based apone wheter it sounds like a c+ is wrong, because it dossent quite capture its magic, but sounds amazing in its own right, and like all mark`s its when you turn it up it really shines.

The mark V channel 2 is flat out briliant , i would buy that amp on the basis on that channel alone, this is Hot rodded plexi territory, and beyond.
The clean channel is also great , you can get eny sound.

The recto i had could never do ac/dc, it alwasy sounds like a recto, the mark V can do just about eny sound imo.

The Mark V definitely has that traditional Mark series tone, but more modernized ( obviously). I feel like those folks who feel like their lacking something in the Recto department may well be very happy with this amp. Sort of has that 'crossover' feel to it. With a nice tight sounding 4x12, like Port City or Orange..this amp is kickin' some serious f**king a$$. Very deep, thick, rich and loads of sustain. You won't be disappointed.

The Mark V channel 2 will benefit from EL-34 power tubes if you are looking for those kinds of tones. The Electra-Dyne outfitted with EL-34's will do these tones very well also. I would find your nearest Boogie dealer with these amps in stock and request to play them with EL-34 tubes. If they are a MESA dealer, they will have some tubes that will not void the warranty. If they will not agree to the tube swap, they obviously do not want to sell you an amp very badly. 8)

I hear a lot comparing the V to the c+ or the IV. I'm curious how channel three of the V stacks up against a Mark III?

There are a lot of III owners that liks their amp better than the other two. Any thoughts?

One option that might be cheaper for you is to try something like a Fulltone OCD pedal with your IIC+. I picked one up to use with my other amp a Fender Blues Jr but really like using it with my IIC+ as it gives me a third sound that is different then the Lead channel.
