Hi,

I'm not sure if this post should sit here... but here goes. After receiving advice from members here, I'm seriously considerring buying a Mk V head. My question is; I have quite a few very nice overdrive pedals... Sweet Honey Bee and Okko Diablo. Given the capability of the Mk V would I be able to ditch these pedals? Also, I have a nice EQ pedal - similarly should I ditch this?

Any thoughts?

its totaly up to you man! im usein a maxon od 808 infront of mine just to give me a little more grit and grind. I say keep em till you get it and try em out. Plus channel 1 and 2 with overdrives=sex to the ears. The eq maybe not so usefull but keep her just in case.

Thanks for info/reply - love the way you describe channel 1 & 2 with overdrives!

its only true man. Im usein my channel 2 on crunch with my maxon od and i pretty much mimic my old vht pittbull cl tone verry marshall jcm 800, then my channel 3 is pretty much just death ripping you apart lol. I love the amp man i stold my vht and a guitar and im still in 1500 dollars debt but so ******* worth it lol.

Pathos - I understand exactly where you are coming from. I'm in the process of selling some really nice British amps HiWatt and Blackstar and a Krank Jnr. I've got to the stage where I need the "best" single amp for me and I think the V is it.

The MkV in the UK is very expensive - but it if it stops me chasing "tones" then it well worth it in my view.

I'm glad I came across this forum.

dude you wont even be sorry. you got the crunchy ness of marshall and the distortion like mesa marks you cant go wrong. No other amp have i tried was any better. My other guitarist is picking up a engl savage 120 and i was like dude i dont even care get a mark v he was like but diffrent amps dude lol but yeah man this site has helped me in so many ways best and friendliest place ive found with gear whores and gear heads like my self. everyone respects everyone which is wicked. Dont be scared to ask anything no matter how dumb you think it is and it will be answered probally by MusicManJP6 he knows his **** lol

The Mark V is great, personally I am not using any distortion pedals anymore, but that's just me... put it this way you don't really need a pedal to get your crunch or lead tones, however you might want to set the amp up a little shy on the gain for rhythm type crunch stuff and then use the pedal for the added gain. It depends on whether you think three basic sounds will give you your "bread and butter" tones or not. With an OD or distortion pedal you can pretty much have 6 tones at your feet for your "bread and butter".

Reading that post by Monty makes me miss that old HiWatt head that I had back in the 80's, damn that was one sweet amp. Nowhere near as versatile as the Mark V, it pretty much did what it did, but it sounded great. Of course if I had to choose I would take the Mark V hands down, but it would be nice to have that old head back just to have it.

I have a BB preamp and although I don't use it often it's nice to use for a retro sound in ch 1 and 2. There are already a million variations of tone in the amp itself, but some pedals can really thicken up the sound.

Once again thanks for the posts. I have booked some time to go and play the Mark V and the Electro Dyne. Strange how all this has happened - I started thinking about a Lone Star Special :) but the more I research the V - the more I like the idea of it.

I traded my lonestar special for the MarkV ... LSS great amp but no comparison to the mark V

I'm going to play the MkV on Friday - really looking forward to it.

Thanks for the advice on the overdrives!
