I have preordered a Mark V head. Does the amp come with a cable to connect the head to my speaker cabinet? This is my first non-combo amp, so I don't know what kind of cable to use...is it just an instrument / speaker cable???

It comes with a foot switch & foot switch cable and a padded covers for both the head and foot switch. No speaker cables are included with the head.

And you will need a speaker cable, not an instrument cable. Make sure you specify either in the store or online when you buy it.

Thank you for the response. Out of curiosity, what is the difference between an instrument cable and a speaker cable? Are the two wired that differently?

the guage (thickness) of the core wire (the actual metal that passes the signal from the guitar to amp or amp to cab. speaker cables are thicker because the amp puts out a huge signal (amount of power) while a guitar (patch) cable only needs to transmit mit a tiny signal from pickups (like millivolts or something)...

technically i think you can use a speaker cable for a guitar but would be a waste of money.

its like water pipes... the pipe running to your faucet is thinner than the pipes coming out of the water tower or other water supply (which supplies every house with water)

What has been mentioned is useful. Also, remember, there are a variety of cables and their quality varies as well. Personally, I buy the best cable I can afford, whether that be instrument or speaker!! I want the most clear signal transfer and NO NOISE!! You may even try a couple different cables to notice the difference yourself. This is especially important when using effects, because there are many cables to introduce noise into the system.

Congratulations on your Mark V purchase. If this is your first head, WOW!! You picked a good one. I am loving my Mark V!!! It has taken over as my main rig. I am sure you will have a great time exploring this awesome amp!

By the way, what kind of cab do you have??

just bought on ebay a boogie 2x12 vertical cabinet made in the mid 1990's. It has two V30's. The guy wasn't sure what type of cabinet it is. Could it be a rectifier cabinet??? I could upload a picture if that would help.

I also heard speaker cables are NOT shielded, unlike instrument cables that are, so they will pick up noise.

The difference in the cables is shielded vs. non-shielded. It has nothing to do with conductor thickness.

the biggest overlooked factor on speaker and instrument cables, shielded and non shielded has to do with gain staging. the jump from instrument level through the preamp to take it to a line level signal is HUGE. any noise introduced in this path before the preamp will be amplified through the preamp then through the power amp section, this noise will be HUGE and the most amplified of any signal/unwanted noise. which is the biggest reason for shielded instrument cable.

if the noise is introduced after the preamp and before the power amp, which in most cases will be rare in heads but more likely in seperate preamp/poweramp setups, will be fairly amplified as well, but not as drastic, lot of times mistaken as amp noise.

any noise introduced after the power amp and before the speaker cab is not that big of a deal in scheme of it all. your signal from the guitar has been multiplied literally hundreds, maybe thousands of times. it is gonna over power any little interferance that might though, just the hum from the amp will be louder than any thing that could sneak through the speaker cable, where as if that same noise would have been introduced between the guitar and preamp it would be a whole different story.

deal with this stuff for a living, not necessarily just guitar / amp situtaion, but close :D
