There are several factors involved in adding low end. Closed back is good, the cab being on the ground (no wheels) really helps as well. More air pushed by the extra speaker alone will help. EQ and gain as well. I had a mark IV widebody combo with matching 1x12 and I wasn't hurting for low end at all and those were both open back.

I didn't own any of the short combos though so I cant comment.

It is absolutely unreal how much size in tone is added with an EV Thiele... even the Recto 1x12's sound great, moreso with the combo having an EV so you can get that EV/Celestion mix.
 
Post some clips of that Cornford, love to hear it!!! Or do one of the Cornford and the Boogie for comparison.
