Mark IV for Power Metal ?

I've recently been growing interest in the Mark IV. Mainly because you can get them for so cheap from ebay, also my friend has one and it sounds pretty good. I havent been able to mess around with it yet but in a few days I will.


Basicly my question is can the Mark IV do Power Metal ? (I know its very versatile, but if you can tell me a little more than that it would be great.) Also if anyone has some sound clips of the amp doing power metal, that would be great too.

Some example of the bands I want to sound like: Hammerfall, Edguy, Nocturnal Rites, Blind Guardian, Nightwish, Sonata Arctica
-All those bands except Nightwish and Sonata Arctica use Engl amps, Nightwish uses Mesa dual or triple Rectifiers, and Sonata Arctica uses Triaxis Preamps..

The Mark IV can get any tone if you know how to use it properly. Yes, that includes Power Metal.

Yea I was looking the Powerball and Savage at first, but they are both around 2,000$ so I was looking for a cheaper alternative...

I think that the PowerBall isn't a great choice for power metal--it's to agressive sounding. Works good for thrash and death metal bands, but power metal bands need tighter response and smoother lead sounds.

I think the Mark IV is probably THE amp you want.

I think the Mark IV is probably THE amp you want.

The Savage would be great for power metal but its 2,300 new, I would use the Powerball as a alternative to the Savage. From clips the power ball can do power metal but the savage would be more suitable.

I hope that the Mark would be able to get the tones I want, it would save me alot of cash and I'd be able to get a nice cap for it and new pickups.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a Mesa/Boogie cab picture in Blind Guardian's Live cd booklet. Maybe it's just the cab, though.

AFAIK, this guy uses a Mark IV for most of his songs (except for 'Apathy', so I've been told). I guess it suits power metal fairly well.

I aint a fan of power metal but from what I know its basically really really fast,tight metal,very symphonic harmony in the chord relations high singing normally about slaying dragons,fantasy style,lots of double bass drum...really fast intricate guitar work,Thats how I would describe it...dont know if you purist power metalers would take this as too general,mayby you could explain this better :roll:

And to Sang-Drax, One of the guitarists from Blind Guardian uses a Mesa Triple recto, so you probably saw the cab with that, but the other one uses an ENGL..

Ok I got it. Power metal = modern 80's and 90's metal

It looks like a Mark IV would do this type of music with ease. More amps to check out would probably an ENGL (i just tested out the Ritchie Blackmoore model today), Mark III, and Triaxis rack preamp.

The music isn't very gainy like other popular metal music. That's good IMO and requires an amp that has tone instead of one that is flooded with gain.

I am sure it would be fine but the Mark IV is just a bit more versatile. The Mark III also came with many options and can take a while to find the one that fits your needs (which stripe and which options). The mark IV has two versions but they all have the same features.

Maybe a mark IV and a Mark III would be the best solution
