Anyone have experiance with one? Are they significantly worse than the ones with the onboard EQ?

I can get a good sound without one, but the versatility that the EQ offers is a requirement for ME. The Mark III, with it's 3 channel balancing act almost makes the EQ a necessity. I use mine mainly for getting the lead channel tone after setting the knobs and switches right for the clean and R2 channels. I love mine WITH the EQ, and unless you've come across a deal you can't refuse ($$$), I'd look for one WITH the EQ. No offense, but I'm also not sure what you mean by..."Are they significantly worse than the ones with the onboard EQ?". Do you not like the Mark III? I'll never get rid of mine, but I admit they're not the amp for everyone (their is no such amp, that's why I have so many amps!). :D

+1
I find that at louder volumes the EQ-less mark III's sound better, but I use my EQ always, mostly on the lead channel only, and keeping the R1 and R2 as a more vintagey tone. But the EQ is great on all 3 channels, and for Metallica style cleans and leads, it's a must.....
You can get one installed by Mesa if you got a great deal on one. I'm not sure how much, but I'm sure it's fairly reasonable...
There's plenty on ebay to be had with EQ's and simulclass.
ax.

I've also found while I dont need the EQ is great to have it.

If you find a good deal on one without the EQ why not just use an outboard EQ?
