I should know this....the Mark IIB effects loop switching is a simple on-off footswitch, just two conductors, tip and sleeve, right?

By default, with no plug in the footswitch jack on the underside of the chassis, is the loop on or off? In that mode, does it switch on and off according to whether or not cables are plugged into the send and return jacks?

It's been so long since I had a pre-Mark III amp in the house, I'm not remembering any details for certain.

There isn't a function to use a footswitch for the loop to switch it on/off on the Mark IIB..(Not stock anyway)The loop is always "on"
The footswitches on the underside of the chassis are typically for gain boost/Eq/Reverb.

Correct. The loop is not remotely switchable on a IIB in its stock form. It's active when plugs are installed in its jacks.
