Hey guys,

Thanks for all the help with this amp. It arrived the other day and wow, what a beast!!! It took me a little while to figure out how to run this thing as my only other amp is a 50+, but once I got it figured out I was amazed at the different sounds you can get from this amp. And yes it is LOUD (good thing I have four 200 watt EVM's!).

It is a blue stripe Simul-Class. It had six Philips ECG 6l6's in it, but two of them fell out of the sockets during shipping and got smashed, so I threw in a pair of WXT's in the center. I really do not like the way it sounds at half power, so I'm gonna try a pair of EL34's. Should I go with the winged "C" or Sovtek?

Also, all three of the preamp tubes are the SP12AX7A, which I think are the "quiet" tubes. I heard these are only supposed to be used the the first position. I'm gonna pick up two regular ones, but I am not sure which is the first position. I also heard these amp use one weird preamp tube (forgot the number), but all three positions are labeled 12ax7.

This thing nails the "Master of Puppets" tone, but also has alot of other sounds. You can dial in a great "Dead Kennedys" sound. It does a great Stevie Ray type sound and gets damn close to the old VH "Brown Sound". The clean channel is real nice too and it is nice to be able to switch between and really loud heavy distortion to a nice clean tone, which I could not do with the 50+.

Another thing that is so cool is that on the "Metallica" setting, you can roll back the volume knob on the guitar (in this case a mid-80's Baretta II w/JB) and it gets real clean- this thing has tons of headroom. This amp also sounds really good at low volume, something I have heard others say was that you really had to turn it up to get all these tubes going, but this one sounds great at all volumes.

Are these Philips ECG tubes good? All I ever messed with are the Windged "C" and WXT. Also, it has a silver "tube" on the board. What is it and should it be replaced?

Anyways, my ears have been ringing ever since I got this thing and I think I need another 4x12 to go with it! Thanks to Gary "Dee Dee" James (guitar/ Bootsy Collins) for selling me this amp!

The silver tube is a shield around the V1 tube. This is the input stage tube and the most critical to the overall sound. DO NOT just throw any power tube into this amp. The power tubes must be the correct rating for a Mark III. If I'm not mistaken, you are supposed to have a total of 5 12ax7 tubes in there.

Thanks, I'll have to check the preamp again. The WXT's were in my 50+, tested to mesa specs.

So on the high gain front, hows the Coli stack up for saturation versus a regular Mark III? My 60 watter seems to saturate highly since its much lower wattage. I'm aiming for prog metal.

I've got a buddy here in B'ham that's been using nothing but Coli's for a long time but he goes for the stoner metal, Electric Wizard/Kylesa/QOTSA sounds...

I've never played a regular markiii, but this coli has tons of gain. Listen to "Battery" or "Damage Inc." and you'll get the idea....

Congratulations ....

That is my favorite of the Mark family. If you are sending it to Mesa .... I would find out all the changes that can be done. I like it best with the EL34's.
