Hey guys and gals. Brand new to the forum, this is my first post. Just wanting to see what metal heads are using mark 3's and how you set em up! I have a 91 blue stripe head, it has graphic eq, reverb and the simulclass 60/100w switch. Currently using an orange 4x12 with v30s, and an esp viper with emg 81/85.
Mainly i listen to death metal stuff, so i try as best i can to get a mild death metal tone out of the mark 3. It does a good job, but i wouldnt say its as good at dialing in death metal as my friends peavey 6505. The only pedals i have are a modded boss sd-1 (which i use on dirty tones-Level full, tone to taste, drive on zero), boss ns-2 noise suppresor, Tuner, and a Boss master swith powering a boost and digital delay.
I have seen on other sites a sample head where you can show your settings on the dials and eq, so if someone can show me a link i will put up my settings. Basically just wanting to see if other metal heads are using these things and how you dial em in!
As i said i am new to the forum, mesa and pretty new to guitar in general, so take it easy on me!! :D

try these, those are the settings on my red stripe Mark III plugged to a 2x12 Vader cab. Sounds monstrous

Cheers for the reply! Mine are pretty close to those settings, maybe with a little more highs. How did you post that head up there? I will stick my settings up for you to check out if i can work it out.

you should have no problem getting a thick lead tone with those settings. A lot of highs for my tastes though, personally  But hey, every mark amp is a bit different. My green stripe is a more agressive with more highs, and a bit more saturated in the lead channel yet the red stripe just sounds a bit sweeter.

Cheers man, The tone i have is pretty harsh in the highs. Not too much, but it competes with a peavey 6505 in band practice and i find the highs help it cut a bit more. Those peaveys have such huge thick gain, and massive bottom end, it takes a good amp to compete. The guitarist with the peavey also uses quite a bit of mids for a metal guitarist, but the mesa always cuts through. 8)

Although, I don't think the V setting sounds bad, I prefer pulling the 2200/6600 both down together to just above the middle which I think adds some beef, and then using the pull bright if I need to add in a little zing. I might use it a little differently depending on what guitar I'm using but that's been pretty standard setting for me lately. I've been using my Tele with my IIIs lately as well and I can't get over how good even a Tele sounds through the III. Even that guitar sounds pretty huge through these amps. Think I'm gonna have to pick me up another ole LP with some nice 'buckers in it. Going for the old Al Di tone lately with a sweet rhythm crunch.

+1 on droptrd's settings, those are almost identical to mine. I use a little bit more mids on the knob and scoop them a bit more on the EQ, but mine is a non-GEQ so I have a MXR 6-band in the loop.

Mine and droptrd's settings are ultra-brutal. The right tubes help alot too.

Hell yeah. You gotta pull all the knobs for the brutal metal. I also run mine on class A mode
