all guitars thru a mesa boogie Mark2B

"Walked Away"
http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/95969-02-WALKED.mp3

got the album mixed, off for mastering.
i got a trial master back from my M.E. (franklin at ogre mastering)
this one i'll use as the template for the others.

how's this translating for you?
i had him back off the RMS to preserve more attack, so it's not super loud

40 listens, and no comments....

i guess i could take that as a GOOD sign!
:D

it couldn't suck so bad that no one liked it.......

i'm just looking for some feedback on whether or not the mastering attempt on this one is working....
my ME is letting me provide some feedback on the one, before we do all the rest...

awesome, bro as always. your clips always make me want to get the pdi09. sometimes cab sims can frustrate. the biggest thing that keeps me from doing it is just the fact that the PGA04 is 6 hundy and the pdi09 is 60. i have a hard time believing that they are similar. but then your clips take my worry away.

good tone. clean and articulate. good job again.

i may just have to score one. checked out your tunes. very well done. i usually don't listen to bands of that ilk that aren't on major lables cause the music is just horrific. i dig your tunes. esp. the harmony guitar parts. very nice and yet not typical. keep it up

BENNY!
thanks for breaking the ice!
cab sims, yep, i just don't like them.
this isn't perfect, but for me it's more 'organic'

i have a demeter iso cab, and worked with it for a long time, but never found my sound with it.
it sounded...... boxy.

this one, when eq'd right, sounds like a 57 on a super dry cabinet in a completely dead room.

i made a poor man's pga04 with the weber mass lite and the pdi-09.
if i could have afforded the more expensive unit, that's the one i would have gotten.
the cab circuit is the same.

mesa
it's a nice device, very consistent, and great for live work.
no mic feedback, no low end rumble, none of that.
sound guys always love it, once they know it.

always love your stuff Gonzo, but you should know that if you aren't thrown up mettallica-esque galloping rythms of doom it is crickets around here.

there is a place by me that is selling an mark2b combo, depending on the pwr section i may pick it up. not sure how much different it will be compaird to my '82 studio pre

are you eq-ing at a board or in the software ?

benny
heheh, that made me laugh!

....mettallica-esque galloping rythms of doom it is crickets around here

well, that's not my thing.
it's cool and all, i understand the boogie history there.

i read somewhere that they told all those stories for fun..... that they were inspired by Zappa using a little Pignose battery powered amp to do all those tracks with.

eq-
i do most of the eq at the amp.

i choose a setting on the palmer to suit what i'm doing, rhythm, or solo

once in the daw, i'll do a gentle roll-off (HPF) at 80hz, and i'll also roll off everything above 12khz.
so, it's in the software.

but, be aware, that i am running the signal out of the Palmer, thru a high end mic preamp- a A Designs Audio MP-1.... and into a dbx compressor.
this colors the sounds in a way that is different than the direct palmer sound.
but not unlike a typical studio that puts the mic cabs thru high end mic pres, limiters, compressors, etc....

ah, there is the magic.

well, benny, to be fair across the board, i don't think you'd actually hear much of a difference between the cheapest mic pre i have, and the A Designs.
it's very subtle.

well, anything isn't always better than nothing....
that said, i started out with a little "Audiobuddy"
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/AudioBuddy.html

this actually worked really well!
but then i moved up to a ART Tube MP, thinking that the little tube in it would do something more than just add distortion under the guise of 'warmth'

LOL

but it didn't.

i then got a ART DPS, which is basically an updated version of the tube MP, but with (2) of them in one rack mount, and added a DIO unit in it, which is ART's lower end digital convertor.
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DPSII

this unit, i still have, and use quite often.
i'd say, that has been one of the best cheap items i've ever purchased.

and a good way to get in the game, if you're on a super tight budget.

it's a long dark path benny.

LOL
