Hi

I have an SOB with a Mark 1 P.I. stage fitted, and the pull bright switches. What I’m noticing is the Volume 1 and Volume 2 aren’t as effective tonally as the Mark 1 that I use to own.

I would put Vol 1 on “10”, Vol 2 on “2” with the pull bright engaged (120pF cap from top to wiper if Vol 2) and set the master on anything from “5” to “10”. This would produce a Marshall like sound.

If I were to set Vol 1 & Vol 2 on 7, with the master volume on “4” to “7” I’d be firmly in Santana territory.

I’m finding that I’m not getting much of a change in timbre from the amp.

I also remember my Mark 1 having a lot more mids than my SOB. The transformer set is original and I’m wondering if the Mark 2 output transformer is quite different from the original transformers in the Mark 1.

I saw this as I was building a Dumble clone (Brown Note kit) for someone in the past and I tried substituting the SOB output transformer in the amp to get more bass response. To my surprise the amp sounded thinner despite the Mesa transformer being larger with a bigger core area.

I also remember playing an SOB in a shop when they were new and it didn’t sound thinner than a Mark 1.

Any thoughts on this one?

Thanks for your help.

Regards

Mark
