Which LP do you have?
What year?
Which PUPS?
Looking at the PU rings as a guide how far did you lower them?
ex: neck "flush", "little higher", "little lower etc."

Actually it may apply to any electric guitar, SRV was notorious of having a high action some call it "telephone line" action. Many claimed this attribute to his tone (well besides his abilities), trade-off, you may lose some gain but you get fidelty and better string movement (I think).
 
Pickups that are too close to the strings actually mute the tonal response as the magnetic field dampens string movement.
 
some buzz can add chewy, cool tone , if your fingers can make it work. , keep it smooth with pick hand ie little extra thumb contact etc...... :)
