Hi Guys

I think I have a little problem with my Mark III - blue stripe combo, geq, rev (EL34 modded) export - 60wt, I noticed that when I would turn the stand by on after warming up, the amp would crackle very loud, it doesnt matter if the input jack is pluged into a guitar or not, but when it does make this crackle noise there is flashes of blueish light on each tube, it happends on both tubes simultaneously. This slowly goes away, also I cant turn it down as the volume makes NO difference to the crackle sound - even if there is NO volume on it makes this sound, you can hit the combo with your hand and the noise would sound.
Another thing that I noticed, if I tap one of the power tubes, one would make the crackle and rattly sound, the other would make NO crackle or rattle, ie one makes a tapping sound through the speaker and sounds similar to the noise on start up. I swapped the tubes around to see if it was a bad tube but this made no difference, the same tube noise was in the same socket, so I gather this has maybe something to do with the tube socket ??. I also tried contact cleaner on the tube and pushed in and out of the tube socket a few times.

The amp was serviced when I 1st picked it up a bit over a year ago - 2 EL34's and one pre amp tube were replaced, I noticed that on loud playing in a heavy metalica black album sort of tone, I could hear a very slight crackle noise (at high volume) but I never bothered about taking it back because I thought that it was because it was the combo vibrating at higher volumes. I noticed this sound on start up after a holiday trip down to see family, I took this combo down with me, it traveled about 2000km, and the crackle happened on its 1st start up on the trip. Since then it really hasnt been used too much because of the noise, but im sure the trip down is what caused the crackle noise.

Is there something I can do with the tube socket, the actual tube is tight in the pins by the feel of it, but the tube can wiggle very slightly. What do you think I should do, pay for the amp to get fixed by the tech, or attempt to do this myself ??

Any Ideas

The sockets need to be retensioned, you will need to discharge the caps before attempting this. Its really simple. After discharging the caps, use a dental pick or something similar and make the sockets tighter. With the chassis out and the tubes pulled you can easilly see how this can be done.

But of an update for the one and only person to reply, tube sockets are fine but the sockets them selves are loose in the housing, either way no tension required, but it don't matter now she just went up in smoke, pulled the chassis out this morning looks to have heated up something on the power tube and scorched that area, I can also see a couple of resistors that look to be broken or cracked, and the fuse blew, tech time

Sounds like the power tubes took out the screen grid resistors, common when tubes fry.

Yup so true!

Here's a pic of a Screen grid resistor in a MkIII that fried.

Hi GTS

That is one of them by the looks, but just in front of that area on the circuit board there are 2 resistors that also looked to be cracked. This amp has been modded too by the way, it uses EL34 tubes, I will take a few pics of the internals and post them up soon. cheers

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I added some pics.

I can see that there have been some mods done inside this Mark III, I imagine the plate on top of the caps is a Bias control mod ?? (is that what it is)

I am in Australia, I have had the amp repaired once before and I was not happy with the end result, I still had some of these problems after I picked it up (but only at very high volume) - the tone was pretty good once I knew how to set it up, and I thought I would leave it alone.
I dont think it was cleaned properly, I think it was just bang a new input jack, some valves a minor service and away it went, $230 thanks for coming.

I could take it back to Pro Audio in Canberra (the importer) John there seemed to know his stuff and told me he travels to the states and is trained by Mesa Boogie, he also has all the schematics - parts etc etc, but he said it would need a full makeover and the cost would be at a per hour rate and will get costly, I would love an overhaul - but it is out of my budget at the moment.

I can see the main problems and I think I am pretty good with a soldier iron etc but I don't have the scopes and other tools to diagnose if there are some other underlying problems, I do however have a multi meter etc. I guess the question is, should I just replace what I can see there and give it a try, or just wait till I have some cash to get it done correctly.

cheers

Casey
