In the Lonestar Classic Manual
it says one can switch between an 8 or 4 ohm load at random with a 1X12 speaker
& then choose the tone of your choice... However, it doesn't say what the difference in tone will be...

Can anyone explain what the difference in sound and/or tone is at either setting ...?
Or talk about their preference from experience?

It would be much appreciated...

(thanks in advance....)

I've switched speakers and cabs around a bit with this amp, and it also depends on the ohm rating of the speaker the effect it will have

I wouldn't call it a tone diff, I noticed more of a difference in punch

I once called Mesa, cuz I did not understand the ohm charts in the back, they don't seem to make sense to me....

but in short form, Mesa says the optimum outputs if you are running in 5 or 15 watts, are the 2 "mains"

if you are running in 30 mode, optimal is the "optional" output

Thanks Ric for the good info..

Difference in
punch not tone
.. interesting

Actually I have the Lonestar Classic, not the Special...

Hoping some others would also jump in & add their two cents..

8 ohms vs, 4 ohms?

(thanks..)

I have tried it on my Lonestar. I think the biggest change is its a little brighter with the 4 ohm jack. I am not looking at the manual now, but I think I remember it mentioning running in the tweed setting with the 4 ohm jacks. (or was it run at 50 watts?) Give it a shot, you may like it.

In my opinion:

4 ohms = more sparkly
8 ohms = more smooth (particularly for overdrive)

8 ohms seems to be slightly more versatile if you need to use just one setting live.

But again I've got a special, so the same may not apply for the classic.

I have spoken to Mesa on this topic and they said:

The lower the ohms = darker sound
