Has anyone modded their Les Paul to have split pickups. Seems like it could be very interesting. Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Thanks

I modded my EBMM Petrucci guitar with a push/pull tone pot. It's all humbucking tones when pushed and all single coil tones when pulled. There's some 60hz hum in first and third positions of course, but it sounds amazing!

I made a video of it a while back:

Did you have to change your pick-ups or just the tone control?
The vid def helped. thanks. It seemed to make more of a difference on the clean more than the distortion channel.

thanks Joey B this helps alot

Note: I do not have my LP coil tapped, as the hum would get on my last nerve. I do however have the 50's wiring as well as the independent volume control mod. This will allow some very nice blending when in the middle position on the pickup selector, sometimes sounding very different from the traditional LP. I have a few magnets that I plan on trying out, and may see how I like the "Peter Green mod". The neat thing is that all these mods can be reversed and will only cost you a little solder and time. :D

This is great ... I have a JB in my main guitar and plan on putting a P-Rail in the neck. I also plan on putting in a THD Quintet. Thanx

I have a few guitar that I've split the humbuckers. It's noticeable with clean tones but I don't find much difference in high gain.

I would like to try Seymour Duncan P-Rails. I'm sure those would great to play with. I'd probably go with a 21 sound wiring:

I have one guitar I wired that way.

The pickups are stock, but I had to change out the tone pot for a push/pull pot. The cleans definitely benefit from this mod. The distortion is not as noticeable but there is more clarity and chime when you hear it in person. Adds alot of versatility for sure.

I have the Jimmy Page wiring (split coils, series, and out of phase push/pulls) in my McNaught Vintage Single Cut, with added killswitch and soloswitch. Great tones! Really worth doing!

Good luck with your mods!

Very cool. Is this your set up? I'll have to try it for my next Les Paul wiring.

Yes, that's my setup Jacko123. I got the schematic from Seymour Duncan but that looks the same. I emailed the schematic to Dave McNaught when he took my guitar order.

I also had him install 2 mini toggles, a killswitch and a soloswitch. The soloswitch takes everthing out of the circuit and sends the bridge pickup straight to the output jack. Pretty cool feature.

This is my guitar in action played by Dave McNaught. By the way, I'm Machine Man on the McNaught forum. Dave not only builds a fine instrument, but he's a heck of a player too.

By the way, I don't think splitting a humbucker has the inherent hum like a regular single coil pickup would because it is still hum cancelling even when only one coil is used (just having the reverse wired coil next to it).
