Well, I just put my Doug's tube combo in my Triple last night. Everything sounds ******* great but I Had to ditch the V1 Tungsol in favor of the one Russian 2 Mesa tube I had in it. The tungsol is just way too hairy in V1 for me. The reas of the tube combo is, in order from v2-5: ballanced Mullard, Penta Labs, Shuguang 9th gen and a balanced Sovtek LPS.

My stock layout was the russian 2 in v1 and the rest were Chinese mesa tubes. The gain was waaaaay to fizzy and a little cold sounding. It also didn't have the best low end response either, was rather trebely and mid peaky.

My power tubes are TAD 6L6GC STR's and I run the 5U4 big bottle rec tubes (I have a set of EH 5U4GB's on order that should be here tomorrow)

So in short....I got 1900 in the head......and a couple hundred more dollars worth of tube experimenting to make is not sound like a Marshall and alot closer to my buddy's older 3ch Triple. My STR440's sounded like ass, no low end at all even after a 3 day burn in without shutting the amp off. And my Chinese preamp tubes sounded just as bad. "Tone is very subjective" according to Mesa.....but the more Mesa tubes I yanked the better it sounded.....and now it actually sounds like 2 Triple Rectos in the room over at my buddies jam room, and not 1 Triple and 1 Marshall (mine sounded like a marshall next to his).

Sorry for the novel.....Finally feel like I have an amp that was worth what I paid for it.

You may want to watch doing that. Some people have fried their power transformers by leaving the amp on for long periods of time....

Mesa told me it was fine to burn my tubes in like that when I called and told them how crappy the 440's were sounding. They said to leave the amp on for a couple days and it would warm up and smooth out the power tubes.......didn't do much lol.

Well, Yes and No on the "Burn in" part. Sometimes you get new tubes and they sound harsh and scratchy to the old ones, when in fact you are just used to hearing the mellower old tubes. A little time fired up and they smooth out.
On the other hand, I have had tubes for six months and they still sounded awful. Luck of the draw until you find the right ones. Cheers
