JJ High Gain set vs Doug's Tube Kit

Ok, so for the last 2.5 years the only valves I've had in my Dual Rec's pre amp have been a set of high gain JJs. Of late my tone has deteriorated somewhat (I replaced the power amps tubes a few months ago so they should be fine) so I guessed the preamp tubes must be due to be replaced. Because of some good reviews I've got this set on order from Doug's Tubes...

Tung-Sol 12AX7
High Gain JJ ECC83
Penta 12AX7
Shuguang 12AX7 9th gen
Sovtek 12AX7 LPS

Basically all I'm wanting to know is what tonal differences I can expect with my new preamp set?!

I can't wait for them to arrive because all I've heard in my amp are JJ's. Thanks for any info!

let me know what you think chap, as I have been using the jj's in my Triaxis and 20/20 rig...and was thinking of going to dougs.

The JJ setup in my single rec sounded shrill and generally harsh. I switched to a Doug's combo, the amp never sounded better.

I had ordered the same pre set of tubes for my Triple Rectifier a few months back, and upon first review, thought they were pretty good. However, I still wasn't getting the sound I really wanted. More recently, I've broken into the NOS world and for a few dollars more, I have gotten a pre setup that will murder the set from Doug's.

If you're happy with the setup from Doug's, hats off to you. If it sounds good, it is. On the other hand, if you're looking to experiment a little, find a used RCA 12AX7 on eBay (they're about $20 - $25 shipped if you look). I guarantee that you would NOT be disappointed.

I just order that Mesa preamp set from Doug's yesterday. Can't wait to get them. I have a DR also and the old Mesa stock tubes are so ragged that I hope the Doug's set is gonna make my DR come alive.

I will post again after I re-tube and play.

I love metal, hard rock, pretty heavy distortion. The RCA USA short plate version sounds excellent in V1. I've also heard it sounds good in V3, but if you wanted to try out an amazing NOS tube, put one of those in V1 and you won't be disappointed.
