Then the question becomes... what is the right bias? To me, the right Bias is OUT of cross over distortion and sometimes a bit beyond allowing for earlier breakup. If that is the case then the right Bias would eat up tubes faster but give a better tone.

Where are you getting your facts from about burning up tubes faster? Tubes are expendable and should be replaced yearly if gigged hard anyway. This is just part of owning and maintaining a tube amp.

Running JJ tubes in a Mesa will allow them to work for a long time since, as the previous poster stated, they draw less natural current and will last LONGER at the compromise of a "less warm" power section.
