James Hetfield's Recto Tone- how does he get it?

I don't like hetfield's tone in this clip at all. Just sounds like a rectifier sounds. I get the feeling there is no gain and when you crank the gain, the sound becomes mud. It sounds like my mark III with both the gaincontrols at 1.
I like an amp to saturate, but still sound tight.
