I am wondering if anyone can identify this tube, I have three of them but no pictures at the moment...but my description will hopefully be enough.

They are an older style mesa tube, labeled in white as follows: Mesa 7025 STR

They have a very long and smooth grey plate. I pulled them from a 1990 Mesa 50/50, and I am pretty much positive they were stock.

Anyone know what these mystery 7025's actually are? Who was making mesas preamp tubes in 1990?

Most likely EI, but a photo will help lots! Mesa has a history of using several different makers for their 12ax7's over the years.

Yeah, I just figured it might be clearcut because I have never seen another mesa 12AX7 like these. When I am at the practice space next I will try to get a shot of it.

What preamp tubes were being thrown into the 2C+'s originally?

7025 is a designation for a super low noise 12AX7. I have an RCA 7025 and it has all the gain of a 12AX7 and it is quiet as a church mouse.

I use NOS Sylvania and RCA 7025's in my Heartbreaker - super quiet even with unshielded Telecaster copies unless I get behind the amp with the guitar right up to it. Great tone and after 9 years not one has failed yet! Some of the Chinese 12AX7's it shipped with didn't make it 6 months! The Chinese power tubes, however were quite long-lived. They actually lasted longer than the Winged C's I replaced them with.

Yeah...I know what all about 7025's, just wanted to know the manufacturer. Looks like its EI...
