The current Maxon pedals are the "modern" version of the classic TS or 808. True bypass helps. Made by the "original" company. Get a Maxon! But that's my opinion.

I want to put a OD pedal infront of my Single Rectumfrieir. Which one would be best for Metal? I heard really good things about the Maxon...
Depending at what you going to use it as. If you going to use it as an actual overdrive then go with the suggestions here. If you whant to use it as a "tightner" then read this: http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/production-tips/346068-tube-screamer-faq-version-1-a.html
Leaf through the thread.. It's a long one and a very good read! After that, please yourself in your own likings.

I like the Maxon OD808, and it's a lot better quality than Ibanez's current build quality...but don't assume that the OD808 is anything like the original TS808. I did some research recently, while breadboarding a TS808 based on the original schematics and borrowing a friend's OD808; I couldn't figure out why they sounded SO different, so I did some digging and found out that the OD808 is actually the TS10 schematic.
Comparing them side to side, I actually prefered the sound of the OD808 to the TS808 clone I built (using metal film components no less). The OD808 has more gain and more volume than the TS808, based on the schematic that I have. And compared to the OD9 (original TS9 specs, that one IS accurate from what I can tell), the TS9 has more of a midrange hump than the OD808.
I think calling it the OD808 is a little misleading, but it's still a great pedal.

the BARBER Direct Drive Super Sport is dubbed "The Tube Screamer Killer" for a good reason.

OK- I am a big Barber fan, but I did not realize the the SS was a TS killer- I have been toying with the idea of replacing my Maxon with a less mid-humped, tranparent, USA made drive to send my ED dirty channels into flame thrower country....you recommend a Barber SS?? I was thinking of a Wampler Ecstacy....convince me....

absolutely, on the DDSS.....

i've had the tube screamers, so i know from 1st hand experience.

one of the cool things is the internal pots:

New internal controls- The Super Sport Direct Drive can dial in Note Shape, Harmonics, Bass, Midrange and presence.

this is essential if you really want to be able to dial in your own personal voice.

yes, taking the backplate off is a pain in the ***, but once you set it, forget it.

AND

you can run it at 18 volts, which is what i do.

it's just that much more expressive and clear at 18v.

and NO, i don't work for barber!!
LOL

i just really like their pedals, especially after trying most everything on the market, save the expensive boutique ones, which i personally don't believe are worth the money.
the barber is a great bang for the buck.

In its stock form, the Digitech Bad Monkey gives you more tonal variety than even many boutique ODs. It's certainly a great recommendation at its price point. Like most things stock, however, I wasn't happy with mine "as is", so I modified it to give me more output, bass response at a lower less-muddy frequency, and more singing mids as well as replacing all the caps, resistors and wire with superior materials. It now stomps the crap out of a stock Maxon 808. The only things that beat it are my custom-modified boutiques or my own hand-built units.

A friend of mine let me borrow a Maxon OD9 - Pro+ for a bit. AWESOME pedal. Sounded really good in front of my SOVTEK. Added the perfect amount of overdrive while sounding very smooth and natural. Had to give it back before I purchased my Boogie but I cant imagine the OD9 sounding bad in front of any tube amp.

Don't forget the Boss SD-1. For all the myth of the 'Tube Screamer' circuit, it comes from the Boss OD-1 originally... as does the SD-1. (In fact, you can mod a SD-1 to various different TS specs quite easily.) It's still basically the same thing, but unlike the others the Boss is priced sensibly :). I just accidentally acquired an old SD-1 - I was going to try modding it, since it wasn't quite working for its owner, who was thinking of getting rid of it unless it could be improved - but it sounded so great with my Tremoverb in totally stock form that I just bought it instead...

I did try bypassing the asymetric clipping (which is what Boss patented, and Ibanez then removed to avoid the patent) which essentially makes it a TS, but that killed what made it sound so good with the Tremvoverb.
