What do you think the lonestar is for? The intro riff to "As i Am"?

Jp most certainly does not get his lead sounds from recto's. He may have HAD to get by with just the roadking on tour occasionally but by choice he uses others mesa's that are better for the job. He would be an idiot not to.

As for nevermore. I dont listen to them really but it just made me laugh that there was almost every amp ever made in that vid except a recto

Anyone that has heard how thin the Musicman JP's sound through a recto will know the score

what do you think about a rangemaster treble booster??? play someone any? ore analogman Beano boost????

Greetings

Oh really? Way to be completely wrong and call JP an idiot all in the same post:

Guitar.com: Let's talk about your gear a little bit. What made you decide to switch from the Mesa C+ amps to the Road Kings?

Petrucci: I wanted something different. I'd been using the C+ amps for a long time, and I love them - they're one of my favorite amps ever. But on this album I wanted - there were a couple reasons, actually. One is that I wanted a more aggressive sound, some more teeth and hair. The C+ is a very tight, focused amp. I wanted something that was a little bit more spread, and a little more mushy. That was one reason. The second was that I wanted to get more of a current sound into the band. The C+ is vintage at this point, and it definitely has a certain sound to it. I wanted something that was going to keep Dream Theater in more of a current musical landscape, as far as being the producer and producing the type of album I wanted to hear. And the third reason was wanting to have the lead sound be more creamy. That's something that you kind of can't get out of a C+, and I always had to switch to a Dual Rectifier or a Mark IV for a lead sound, or I would add distortion or something. But with the Road King, and with the Rectifier series, it automatically has enough creaminess and gain as far as leads. I wanted to have that all in one.

Anyway, there's where he talks about always having to switch to the Mark IV or Recto for leads, and there's another interview - that I'm not taking the time to dig up because it's not that important - where he was asked about the split and he noted the Recto being the majority.

Please check your facts before making blanket statements like "JP has never played a solo on a Recto".

It was already posted above, but a Recto was used exclusively on DHIADW and EOR, and it was 50/50 with a Krank on TGE.

Fair enough. He has changed taste since i was a dream theater nerd.

+1 !

Can I have an Amen ? I bought my Petrucci model 6 months ago and have not even changed the strings since the day I bought it. Why ? It is incredibly, atrociously thin with my Dual Rec. I actually am considering dumping the guitar since my LP Custom and EB Supersport sound so good compared to the JPMM. Hell, my Cort Neil Zaza signature guitar sounds better that the JPMM through the DR.....which is a shame because the JPMM is a beautiful instrument.......

Hmm.. strange. By "thin" did you mean razor sharp and no punch? Because if so, that's how I felt about my friend's JPMM. I thought that was just me.

The best way I can describe it is that it does not cut through at all. The tone is just kind of wimpy and small. Its the only guitar that has ever done this that I have played.

Exactly. Thats why i'm so confussed about JP soloing with the recto.

There are other guitars that react like that to the recto. The Ibanez PGM301 is a nightmare. Thin body and maple board make it an absolute disaster with the recto. It actually shagged my vibratto for a while cause i had to pull notes about like crazy to get any sustain at all and bending strings was like a piss weak squeel.

Thats just refering to those particular guitars though (incase i upset a recto owner). If JP used a Les Paul then it would make a bit more sense cause you can get still get some thickness and depth with the bigger body.

Keep in mind, Petrucci does not simply plug his guitars into his amps, he has racks full of gear as well as a guitar tech setting everything up for him and his guitars are custom, probably not exactly the same ones you can buy with his name on them, they aren't setup by his tech and did I mention his rack full of gear??
Also, remember he runs at least 2 heads at a time, offset by 7ms, this makes a huge difference in how full, or thin, or however else it sounds.

If you had not solved the problem ( I doubt) , change your pickpus with active EMGs that work very well with rectos :

yeah, i dont see why he did not do that already or just hotter pickups like Di?Marzio. My Gibson 57calssics are great but i would not use them with that amp...but what do i know?

Dual rectifier = perfect for lead. I never understood why peolple say they are not. But you need to know a couple of things.

first use orange (a lot smoother than red), use less gain on the head (do not go higher than 1 to 2 o'clock) and put an OD in front with the gain set to its minimum, level to max and tone to 12 o'clock. I have tried 7 different OD with my 2 DR and the one i like the most ( and so my bandmates) is also the cheapest one, MXR zack wyld OD (about 100$). With this set up you'll need a noïse gate, otherwise you'll get to much feed back.

most important, turn down the gain, use an OD and use VINTAGE

You'll also get a better lead tone with 6L6 than EL34, but EL34 is better for heavy Rythms

+1 . I have tried boatloads of OD pedals with different results. However, cranking the volume of the OD pedal and keeping the gain of the pedal down always gives the best results.

Vintage mode also works best for me on my Triple Channel DR. Probably because you can push the amp more without getting too loud.
