I was looking at buying a new Express 5:50 and then I came across a used Road King for just a little more so I got that! This is my first Mesa product and I'm so excited! I love the amp already and I haven't even done anything with it yet. It's a little intimidating with all the options and controls but I plan on spending a lot of time with it deciphering. I do have a couple questions if anyone can help me, I'm looking for 3 tones out of it to use as reference points, I read the manual online and tried a few of the examples in there and they are good but was wondering if anyone had a closer representation of any of the following:

1. A good clapton-esque blues tone
2. A petrucci like lead
3. A smashing pumpkins (cherub rock) type rhythm

Any help would be appreciated and I thank you all in advance!

Congrats man.

Is it a series 1 or 2?

I have a Road King as well and it was my first Mesa amp. Mine is a series 1. Love it!

Can't really help you with your three questions, but some advice I would give would be to get a hold of a good EQ Pedal and put it in the loop. It will do wonders for shaping the tone.

Thanks! It's a series 1 2x12 combo and I'm still excited a week later! :D Someone else mentioned an eq to me and I blew him off because I thought it'd be sacrilegious with top end gear. I'm new to nice things  So if I do put an eq in the loop do I do loop 1 or loop 2? Right now I've got my Delay and Chorus in loop 2 with my Wah and tuner in front of the amp. That's another question I have actually. It's a Fulltone Clyde Deluxe wah, should it go in the loop too? Thanks for the help, I'm just trying to get some heads up.

I would say put the EQ in loop 1 since it is series.

As far as being sacrelidge, I understand. But look at it this way, Many of the Mark series amps have the EQ built right in. Think of it as you just supplying your own.

Don't use a wah so I can't help you there.

You got the same amp I got!
