I'm speaking to the late 80's early 90's versions that had the pedal attached with two allen head screws. How do these compare with Boss as far as durability and sound quality go?

I have both vintage DOD and vintage Boss...both seem to hold up well. Each brand has it's own effects that I prefer over the other brand...just personal taste.

Actually, I'm not using either brand in my current setup.

I've had both a DOD Chorus and Boss SD-1 from the 80's! The DOD did'nt last a couple years, the Boss is still going!

I haven't owned either brand in a long, long time (mid to late 80's)... BUT, back then, my opinion was DOD=sh!t, Boss=best on market. My DOD pedals were noisy as hell, and not nearly as rugged as the Boss pedals.

Of course, now there are so many makers at decent price points that Boss seems to just be in the "good" category. Lots of folks mod their Boss pedals...

I've owned many pedals from different mfg's, and I've had 2 Boss pedals that have died on me, (a HM-2 "Heavy Metal" distortion and a SD-1 "Dual Overdrive", I didn't like the way either of them sounded anyways) but I've never owned a DOD pedal that has failed to operate. I have a Boss DD-3 Digital Delay (Made in Japan) that I bought used about 15 years for $30 thats still going strong. I used to own a DOD analog delay pedal, it got the job done. I used to have a DOD "Supra Distortion" that I didn't really like, (I think that was supposed to be DOD's answer to Boss's DS-1 perhaps, which I think is far superior to the DOD) it was my first distortion pedal, I played it through an 60's Kay tube amp (that I still have, & plan on restoring someday). I used to have a DOD Flanger pedal, I'm not sure if it was any better than other flangers or not, but it did the job. I have a DOD Volume/Wah pedal, I prefer my Vox Reissue for my wah, but for the volume pedal function, it gets the job done. I find that the Boss GE-7 graphic EQ will squash your sound if you put it in your fx loop, haven't tried it as a clean boost in front of an amp yet though.

I don't think it would be fair to say that Boss is superior to DOD, or visa versa. Every stompbox mfg has their own gems as well as turds. It's all just a matter of personal preference. And the 2 Boss pedals that died on me might just have been from a bad lot that slipped by Roland's quality control. Don't limit yourself to just DOD or Boss. Ibanez, MXR, and Electro Harmonix also makes some very good sounding and durable stompboxes.

I had a DOD grunge pedal back in the day...when I was in highschool...it was the bomb because it said grunge on it. Quite frankly that little square wave generator was a P.O.S. Built not so solidly...the tapper broke after a couple of years. I mean it served its purpose but meh. On the other hand I have a Boss flanger that works the same as it did the day I bought it. And I bought it used EASILY 12 years ago. I think Danelectro is a decently made product too as far as pedals are concerned. I have a delay, a Fab tone, which was my main distortion for years before I bought the Single Recto...but not to get side tracked...I think that due to the way the boss pedals are designed...the foot switch on them are simply more durable. So for that reason I feel they are better.
