How do you Dial in your EQ?

So...
When your "Dialing in" the EQ (front or Loop) how do you go about setting it up?
I use an old Ibanez GE-601 in front of my LSC and I only use it as a boost as it seems the Dynamics of the Amp become too shrill or too lost depending on how I adjust the individual knobs. Is there a standard way of setting each MHZ to obtain a superior tone?
