I'm considering buying a Mark IV short chassis combo from a friend of mine. He bought it new in the UK about 3 years ago. It has the export transformer inside, and I'm using it with a 220-120v converter.

The amp is a bit noisy - even without my guitar plugged in there is a fair amount of hiss which is exacerbated by raising any presence/treble control. It's worse on R2 & Lead.

I thought it might be caused by the voltage converter - anyone think re-wiring the export transformer for 120v usage might fix the problem? I called Mesa and they said this was pretty easy to do. The flip side of this is that the converter may actually be regulating and filtering the power to my benefit.

Another thought would be to replace the tubes, which are all original.

I love this amp though, and really want to figure this out. Anyone have any suggestions?
