Hey everybody, I'm in the process of retubing my preamp. So far I put a JJ Ecc308s in V1 and a JJ12Axz (high gain) in V2. I tried the Tung sols and didn't like em at all. Channel 2 sounds WAAAAY better, very good for a heavy crunch (in crunch mode) now where as before it sounded kinda weak to me.

Now I'm trying to sweeten up ch3 for singing lead tones. right now it sounds thin and brittle on top and generally not very warm.

In the manual, V4, V5, & V6 all only affect ch3 (as well as reverb and effects return) So I figure I can safely change these out without affecting what I have right now.

So what would you all suggest for those positions? I'm not afraid to spend on some nos to get it right. So far I'm wondering about the Tungsram holland Ecc83 or the RFT E.germany.

Also I tried a 12AT7 in various positions and it did warm things up but was a bit dead and low on gain.

Thanks!

take heed: I roasted through several nice NOS tubes in V1 and V2... and then I learned better. an RCA longplate and a GE something or other...been a while now...

actually my amp killed a pair of the new tung-sols too.

I did have some good luck with a JAN Philips 5751 in the PI position (but this is a magic tube in the PI for many amps.)\\

and despite my previous worries, IIRC there's an original Mullard in V1 right now and an RFT in V2...kicking *** and taking names after 50 years..

Thanks but keep in mind I'm happy with ch 1 & 2 so my concept is to just play with V 4,5&6. Also Im not dead set on nos tubes, just seems like everything I've read leads me to believe they are warmer in general speaking terms, hence my notion.
