Hey guys, First post here. I bought a triple rec. used a couple months ago and have never thought the tone was what it should be. Not enough gain, especially on channel 3. The amp came with Sovtek 6L6's. I went to Guitar Center tonight and played a new one. Damn what a difference!!!! Such a big difference that I bought new Mesa 6L6's and payed very close attention to the settings on it. I loaded my triple rec with the new 6L6's and it did not make any difference at all.

Any ideas???? The only other problem the amp has is what I think is a bot volume pot on channel . It goes silent at about 6 - 8 .

I would really appreciate any help!!!

Thanks

Try replacing your preamp tubes as those control your tone the most. I'm willing to bet you need some new ones.

The volume pot sounds kind of suspect, if it got bumped it's possible a lead has come loose from the pot.

+1 to the preamp tubes. Since you bought the amp used, it probably would be a good idea to just shotgun the tubes (replace all of them) rather than troubleshooting them. That way, you know if it is still messed up that the tubes are not the problem and you can take it to a tech or whatever you need to do.

I would be willing to put money on the preamp tubes as your problem though.

the volume pot is very suspect. it probably got knocked loose. It's happened to my amps a couple of times and I've had to unscrew the pot and clamp it down with needle nose pliers. It's a bit of an annoying fix because of the tight space, but it's manageable. You will probably have to unscrew the chassis to do that, so if you do, don't touch the big blue battery-looking capacitors or you may get electrocuted.

If gain is lacking outside of the volume issue you could have a bad grid resistor. Have a tech look it over. Shouldn't be much (100 bucks maybe? give or take 25) to replace the volume pot and grid resistor.

Good luck
