I'm doing a tube swap. Of course, you can't see the V1 socket. I have spent the last half hout trying to put a new tube in. I'm in full blown temper tantrum right now. How do you line up the prongs? Can anyone save me a trip to my amp tech?
Thank you.

Dan

Sorry man, you have to remove the chassis first...THEN you can reach V1...sux...
head?turn it on its "end"...change the angle of your dangle....thanks to Vic for that change of latitude advice..I have changed my v1 a LOT /never pulled the chassis/pay attention to the direction of the "prongs" as you pull out

i have never had to pull the chasis either. getting it out was quite simple as long as you are being firm....yet gentle

getting it back in was a bit difficult the first time i used an old 12ax7 with contact cleaner to lube it up and got it in there a time or 2 to lube it and pay attention to which way the key is facing on the tube and slid the new one right in.

I'm the OP. Thanks for the advice on turning it upside down. I have the combo; I flipped it, found the proper positioning with the original tube and then was able to install the new tube. I swapped the original for a Jan-Phillip 5751. I also changed all 6L6's for SED Winged "C" 6L6's. I was given great advice from Robert at the Tube Depot. He recommended against wasting money by unnecessarily replacing the rectifier tube and the other preamp tubes. I love to save money!

I am not one to give fake superlatives to justify the cost of a product that only gives a subtle difference to your tone. With that being said, I spent $120.00 for the four power tubes and the one pramp tube, and it was worth it. I found the distortion from the stock tubes to be too harsh for my personal tates. It is much creamier and richer now. It really sounds good. I am looking forward to using it at a gig I have this weekend.

Bear in mind, I did not change out the rectifier tube or the six remaining preamp tubes. This was done on the advice from Robert at The Tube Depot. He would have gladly sold me more tubes, but he thought it unnecessary for this amp. VERY good advice.

What style of music would say this change would benefit. I too was looking at the winged C's and swapping out the V1.

Blues, Jazz and Rock. I mainly play Classic Rock from the '60's and '70's. I can't speak for shredder rock, as I never play that nor listen to that stuff.
