On the Heartbreaker, my understanding is that if the power switch is set to 60 watts, only the outside tubes are active, while the middle two are in standby, correct?

Would it harm the amp if I used a pair of EL-34s in the outside sockets, set the power switch to 60 watts, set the bias to EL34 and either 1. left the two middle 6L6s in or alternatively 2. remove the middle two 6L6s and just run on the two EL34s?

What I want to hear is how the amp sounds with EL-34s without having to shell out more money on a second pair. Thanks in advance for the help!

Yes you can populate the outter two tube sockets with EL-34s and set the switches as you describe. I would leave the 6L6s out of the inner sockets just to be safe. If the 60/100 switch were some how put in the 100 watt position the 6L6s would more than likely fry and possibily take the output transformer at the same time.
